Nevermind my comment on the water pump, brain fart. So when did they go to that #? and when did they start 488296? The 124 was 70-71

Not sure, but the Black Car has a cowl tag date of 2nd week Dec. '71, and a delivery date of Jan. 11 '72. The engine casting date is Aug. 18 '71. The water pump is a bit early, but maybe not totally outside the bounds of probability.
The bushings came from Ecklers Corvette. The invoice is posted on the prior page with the PN. |

Would it be more improbable for the water pump to be cast 114 days before the block, or 41 days after the block? The heads were cast 14 days after the block on August 25th.

One would have to study EUNs to know when a particular engine was assembled. The water pump is one of those items that wasn't engine specific, so consumption was high and one would surmise the date is close to the assembly date. The block or heads may have been run in batches and can be several weeks before the assembly date. Same with other parts that are specific to a low volume build.

I knew that, just always heard if the system has been open for any length of time, you have to replace receiver/drier. I just didn't know if it absorbed too much moisture was the reason behind that. I just never wanted to waste my R-12 with chancing an old one if I didn't know for sure.

I believe AC driers have desiccant in them which absorbs moisture. One of the ways I dry out desiccant is by placing the material in an oven and baking it prior to re-use. I would assume to do the same if re-using drier.

How's the body progress coming?

The bad news is it hasn't really progressed any. The good news is Tom is about to get geared up on it.
Continuing to make progress on the pieces and parts here at the Garage. Got the intake manifold reinstalled yesterday, so the motor is getting close to paint. The valley pan was in really rough shape and had just been painted over without a lot of cleanup. We left it in place, but scrubbed it really good, sanded it down, did several coats of high build primer, wet sanded, and so on until most of the defects covered and filled in well. We then painted the valley pan and bottom of the intake and crossover before the install. Lastly, the valve covers are also now ready for paint. They were media blasted, flanges flattened, dents filled with bondo, and then the high build primer and wet sand process. They should look really nice. More exciting to me was the "paint booth" in what used to be my wood shop got totally redone. It had been in place for about 3 years and was past it's prime with paint dust everywhere. We blew out the shop with a leaf blower, hung new plastic, put down a new canvas tarp on the floor, and put a plastic shelf inside to hold paint and supplies. It's a big improvement. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I know mine does!
Bob, is the motor stock, or 'enhanced' a little? I can't recall if Steve (or you and Dave) did anything to it? Dennis |

Thanks guys. My wife definitely knows I am "whacked", but she is such a good woman. I married well and am very lucky.
I am going to do a specific post most likely, but can anyone tell me what type of finish should be on the idle solenoid bracket? Was it bare steel, black, or zinc phos/silver cad? Appreciate any help on this. Looking to forward to getting the engine painted and everything "dry fit" and mocked up. I did that on the Gold Car and it was much easier to remember how everything goes together while on an engine stand. |

I am no expert on any of this but I will say when I took my original off on the underside which wasn't exposed to all the elements/atmosphere, I noticed a gold hint to it. Just like my throttle bracket cable. FWIW.

Stock crankshaft, forged rods, forged pistons (replacing the insane 11 to 1 domed pistons), internally balanced. Melling SPC7 455HO repro camshaft. Cliff did the carb. Rocky set up the unitized distributor curve. My wife, and kids, and I assembled it. Each person installed two pistons. :-)
