It's critical to get a low pressure drop filter setup. You're going to need lots of oil to your bearings and a restrictive filter forces more oil to go over the pump bypass.

I'd be inclined to use a dual spin-on filter setup with -10 minimum hoses. Make sure the filters have bypass valves in them. Use a Fram HP filter or similar that is designed for low restriction. You don't want a street filter that is designed to filter out the small micron particles.

System 1 filters are fairly restrictive.

The Boss Bird doesn't have a filter in the engine circuit at all.

I didn't know that. Any data available on how restrictive (pressure differential vs. flow volume)? I always used System-1 for the convenience of inspection. I think mine has a particle-size rating of 50 microns, so I assumed it would be considerably less restrictive than normal cartridge-style filters of 10 microns or less. Yeah, it has less area than a cartridge filter, but it's a decent amount of area, with its pleated-cylindrical stainless mesh design.

No data like that available....I wish...

I've been texting off and on with a guy who's having oiling trouble. He was using a System 1 filter and installed pressure transducers upstream and downstream. He decided that there was an unacceptably high pressure drop but didn't share the numbers. He runs 50 weight oil and a Melling pump. I assume that he was using the finer mesh element...but again I'm short on real data.

I've also heard from some local guys who run a pulling truck. They were trying to use one of those flat Oberg filters. It had a huge pressure drop and they threw it in the trash. As you know, the flat filters have a super small flow area...something like 1/5 the area of a pleated cylinder.

The Boss Bird has a System 1 filter on the return line to the tank. We liked the stainless filter because we don't have to worry about nitro breaking down the element. We use the coarse mesh element (with 70 weight oil). The primary oil feed into the engine is unfiltered. Maximum flow is the do-or-die of a nitro engine. And any junk in the oil is created by the engine so why not filter it before it goes into the tank instead of filtering it after the tank (before the engine feed).

That is the reason why on our Prototype Turbo Engine testing, Eric, we have the normal oil filter feeding the engine but we also have a secondary "screened" turbo filter before the Turbo Inlet Line. The screened filter has several hundred times the flow area of the inlet to the Turbo CHRA (Compressor Housing Rotating Assembly) so we do not have a pressure loss across the "Rock Catcher" filter.

When the engine is being run hard, no matter how clean the engine was when it was assembled for dyno testing you will still have material coming off the internals in the engine. Some of that material is large enough to restrict the flow passage in the CHRA and cause a very expensive turbocharger failure. So we try to save the turbo as much as we possibly can with the aux filter feed assy. So far we have never had a Turbo failure with that system installed. Crap does come off engines. Your return filter deal is a good method of catching the stuff that returns back to the tank for sure.
