I know people like to keep this close to the chest but how can you tell the real from the fake?
Take the eBay item below, I am assuming not real by the price so far but I don't know. What am I looking for?

Yes, I see that now that you pointed it out. I really just skimmed over the add as there are quite a few that I see. Anyway can still use that carb as an example.

hmmmmmmm.... fairly sure they never made a 442 W-31 ....I thought the 31's were Cutlass's .....

and different numbers........

and the font looks like the early stamping..not the fatter font I am used to seeing on the 2nd gen Qjets..

but ... my .02 worth .........

ram air carbs have provisions for a rubber boot around the accelerator-pump...real clue there for sure...first thin to look for..

Pontiac uses it's own very unique bolt on arm too...base plates are something to look at

If it's so cheap it's too good to be true....it's too good to be true..

Search these forums there's 100s of images of real carbs save them on your computer and study them..it doesn't take much to figure it out...

There at least 3 fonts on Pontiac carbs..know which is right for the date is important to conclude real or fake..all the stuff the forgers do, they haven't got the stamps figured out yet..and that's why people with real carbs are picky about showing pics...

There's known dates for extremelly rare carbs because they where batch stamped..

I wouldn't be in a hurry, you can use any old carb and put the correct one on when you actually find one...

Greg, you probably need a 7028273 gm used them up on ram3s before they used the other..

Looks like it's right...there's a number stamped on the bowl..it's on the bottom of the fuel inlet..it's important..no one ever restsamps it

The other thing no one gets it the pick code..on that carb it's XX..the other is XB and others...they don't get that right either

The base has a casting number it's important too..

It could have a wrong base but right bowl..it's happened..

Pay attention to the font...it varies..and be patient

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't that carb start life as an auto carb ? (Plugged front vacuum port). Shouldn't the primary blades also be drilled ?

No 1969 RamAir Q-jets uses the vacuum port on throttle plate, passenger side, for timing retard.
Also, the throttle plate is made by Carter. Carter never made ANY parts for a RamAir Q-jet.

Agree - I have custody of the Carter drawings. Carter castings on an alleged RA carb is a dead give-a-way that it isn't.

I sent this ebay seller a question about the base plate casting numbers and side vacuum port on his $3500 RA3 carb. Strange, no response. But it sold 3 days later. It really is buyer beware and educate yourself.

Its sad that those of us looking to protect ourselves from getting scammed can't find the info to become informed buyers. I'm looking for a correct carb for my '70 Judge, but no one is willing to educate us! I understand the information could also be used for other to re-stamp and make frauds, but isn't that already being done? Knowledgeable folks are easily picking current frauds off E-bay, but the rest of us are screwed. I wont pull the trigger on a $3000 +/- carb (a CRAZY amount of money for a CARB) until I can be confident I am not being scammed! I was a police officer for 23 years. I'm not looking to screw someone, I'm looking to protect myself from being screwed. This is very frustrating!
