The line workers got them in the general vicinity, but there were a lot of variations depending on who was working the line that day.

The 1968 GTO was the first mass produced Pontiac to receive body stickers (on the 1/4 panel), and many times those stickers were crooked, too far forward, or too far backward. Line workers were used to installing die-cast emblems, and those emblems went into punched holes, so alignment wasn't necessary. Starting with the 1968 GTO (which they made a ton of), having a line worker place stickers on the body was something new to them. They didn't measuring anything, they didn't have tape lines to make sure the stickers were straight, they just put them on the body based on where they were instructed to place them. Most of the time, they were fine. Quality Control would have corrected any huge mistakes.

The Judge fender logo sticker was the same way. Original photos of 69 Judges show them in slightly different spots, some even crooked.

1979 Trans Ams were notorious for having shaker scoop stickers too high, too low, too far forward, or too far backward. Wherever they were placed, other side was always the same, so you know it was how an individual was placing the stickers for that shift on the assembly line that day.

Ours came off the first time we took our new '68 through the automatic car wash.

I gave Bill Porter some crap about it when I saw him at a car show in 2009 or so...
