ok-like I said.... 30 years ago-I just remember the something wasn't the same inside the block

Trynsave, I forget stuff a lot quicker than 30 years ago ! You may have been thinking about the way Pontiac controlled the compression ratio in the 4cylinders. 61-62 it was controlled by the piston domes and 63 by cylinder head combustion chamber size.
About the only differences I know of.
