So Keith the code scribbled on the firewall tells the paint shop what to color the car without looking at the cowl tag. Sounds right but how come the red car doesn`t have a code on the firewall? For that matter few originals have a code I have noticed. Wasn`t the red car also built in Mich.?

Yes - the red car was also built in Pontiac.

Either it was missed in the original build, or not replicated in the restoration(s).

It wasn't an engineering dictate but more a "help a brutha out" based on local processes.

I notice the truck plants were much more prolific with their writing on the firewalls. Here are a few truck threads I've participated in that demonstrate the concept:

I've noticed quite a few. I suspect that now that it has been pointed out you will see them all over the place.

My own car has a big "A" on the firewall, presumably to designate "Starlight Black".
