I have seen pics of them without the parts on the car hauling trailers, but I thought that was to prevent damage to them for loading and unloading, and that the parts were installed once the car was on the ground at the dealer.
There is a memo where at 1st they used a metal block to space the front end up, for transporting the cars on carriers. Around 1977 (I think, maybe 1976?) they changed it to where they were shipped in the car (trunk?).
Just the front spoiler, flairs not removed.

There's a pretty cool picture floating around with 2-3 tenth T/A's being unloaded at a dealer. I could have sworn there were no fender flairs on the cars. Anybody have that one handy? Was the one where the driver was using blocks to shim the ramps or something precarious like that. Probably an yearly 60's car hauler.

Would be interesting to see if the parts were in the trunk

.
These cars were not "flair delete", as much as "flair delayed". They were eventually installed when the correctly manufactured product was available. That being said the holes were there. If you look in the pick from Mike, they are clearly visible.

No doubt those cars still got some road rash under the front bumpers. That's a serious angle on that hauler for an F body

Pontiac used the word "delete" in Car Distribution Memo 79-F-8, but they did not actually delete the front air dam and front wheel spoilers, they were simply not installed. The wheel spoilers were shipped separately, the air dam was not shipped at all because of production problems. Again, this was for a brief time period only, and only Norwood cars. When the car arrived at the dealership, the customer was given the choice of whether to have the wheel spoilers installed without the front air dam. The other option was to not install the front wheel spoilers at all and drive the car "as is". When then air dam was available, the customer would come back to the dealership and have the air dam and wheel spoilers installed.

Pontiac began shipping Trans Ams without the center air dam starting February 1974. The center air dam and attaching screws were shipped in the trunk of the car. This was to prevent damage upon loading/unloading during shipping.

The front suspension spacers, which gave extra clearance and prevented the suspension from compressing during shipping, were used from 1970 through February 1974.

Mike

As Mike said to prevent damage during loading and unloading. I can tell you, as an ex car hauler that there is very little clearance when you load and unload cars.... especially the Firebirds and Camaros from that era and the newer years too. It wasn't uncommon to load or unload and hear the front bump scrape the pavement a bit. It all depended on the type of trailer used to deliver them. The last trucks with the Cortrel 6 car trailers were the best with no scraping because of the ramps and lower trailer at the rear. The older 7 car trailers were higher and the rear used 2 piece ramps that were steeper and shorter. Depending on where you were delivering those caused the most damage. I can confirm that.

So the car is done , and has made a few rounds to the local car shows. I even picked up a stone chip! The side splats have been professionally clear wrapped to take care of future stone issues. The one thing im lacking is one muffler , as its been replaced, . Where I ask, can I get an original style muffler, and pipes , to meet up with the original chrome tips? Does anybody repo them?

Walker & others have made pipes for them, but they are not the same as the originals. I don't believe anybody has resonators (mufflers) & tail pipes like the originals yet. They had a lot of odd bends & reliefs in them that would be pretty hard to duplicate. I have a full set of originals & a set of walkers if you wanted some pictures, but I am not sure that will help other than just confirm they are different. I put the walker setup & a pair of "turbo" mufflers on my 80 pace car when they originals where rusted through. They look & sound good, just not the same as the orignal 78-80 oem stuff was.

Has Gardner done anybody's mufflers, therefore they may have a pattern? By the way, the front passenger side splat seems like it wants to pull away from the body. Does anybody else have this issue/ The splat is the one on the front fender.

Ironically I was just emailing with Eric Gardner about some other issues & he mentioned they are starting to make systems for the 2nd gens. I was not aware of that. I have some picts he just gave me, I'll post them up. The mufflers were more of a resonator & were fairly specific as I recall. I had a cat delete pipe on one of my cars years ago with the stock exhaust & it was pretty darn loud as I recall.

Here's a 100% stock system that came off a 78 Trans am, when it only had 3K miles on it. Went into a garage attic until I bought the system from the original owner a few years back. Only thing missing is the two clamps. The exhaust shop also cut the rear pipes to remove them. So they will have to be tig'd together & cleaned up.
