I took a few pics of what I'm dealing with. You can see the alternator wants to lean backwards, due to the top bracket pulling it back. The top bracket is not adjustable, so I really don't know how to get that lean worked out. It's throwing the belt alignment off.
Usually I take really good pics before I take things apart, but wouldn't you know it, I didn't this time. I think the belt was always out of alignment, so I don't think I created the issue. Does anyone see anything out of place? I have a little spacer, about 3/8" thick, designed to slide over a bolt. It came out of the car, but no matter where I put it, the alignment gets worse. I also snapped some pics of numbers I found on the alternator and PS pump. Just for informational purposes.

Is the top bracket on alternator supposed to bolt to that intake bolt?

The parts book I was looking at shows the 9786901 PS pulley to be 69-70 w/AC which I see that car has. I think your issue may be that you are running an aftermarket intake manifold. I ran into that with my 72. It has an old school Edelbrock P4B manifold and where they have the t'stat housing is not the same location as a stock intake. I couldn't use the correct rear alternator bracket on mine as the hole didn't line up with the t'stat stud. I'm only using the front one for now until I replace that manifold with a correct 72 stock intake. Looks like someone bent back that rear alternator bracket on yours to get it to fit the t'stat stud, throwing the belt alignment all off.

The reason is, you are trying to bolt parts that bolted to a '70 head accessory pattern on a '71 engine/head accessory pattern and as such, used different brackets.

Were the bolt patterns on the heads different from 70 to 71? The heads on the car now were built in late 69, so I figured they'd work properly with the 70 brackets.

The '70 heads should work fine.
Can you see the numbers on the pulleys? Specifically the water pump one for now.

I wish I would've saw your post earlier, because I just got the nose back on. I had to pull it outside to get a good look at the new wing! I have new radiator hoses coming, so don't mind those ugly things. I also took pics of the original motor mounts, and the Q-jet that came with the car. I think the carb is a replacement from the mid 70's.

So, you have the actual 455 frame mounts? Does this cars' VIN start with 2423701110xxx?

Yes. It has a P in the 7th digit, so Pontiac MI built. It actually ends in 242 also, which is kinda cool.

Dropped the car off at the body shop yesterday, along with my buddies Nova. While the cars at the shop, I plan on redoing the interior and a bunch of other little things.

on your pulley situation: you're running a 1970 setup on the alternator and power steering and most likely the tall 70-78 waterpump on the 11 bolt 69-up timing cover so you need to run either 128,129, or 130 WP pulley that were specific to late 69 and 1970 and replaced the early 69 through service. I'll have to look up the crank pulley (I'm getting old!), but that was the same 68-70. If you're motor is from a 71 it probably has the 71 pulleys on it and won't line up with the 70 alt/PS setup (as you can see)
Since the alternator bracket is lining up with the intake bolt and the water neck bolt, it's spacing isn't an issue like we found on Jeff's 72 with the aftermarket intake that moved the water neck forward so his rear alternator bracket couldn't be mounted. 9790846 is the crank pulley you need 9799127, 128,130 any will work for the WP, differences are diameter. I want to say the WP pulley came back to a 71 GTO, but the car is at the body shop now so I cant confirm it. I do have the original pulleys from the other 455, so I'll check the codes on them and report back.

It's been a while since this thread has been updated.
The original body shop handling the car went under, due to the owners health. The car is now at another shop getting finished. Progress has been slow, although the quality of work is great. Ended up getting a new hood and trunk lid from Ames. The fit and finish on them is great, and with the lack of good original sheet metal around here, it was a no brainer. Plus being close enough to Ames, that means no shipping cost! The car is close to color now. Just a few small details to take care of, and it'll be ready. The color is 2019 BMW Jet Black. Its supposed to be one of the blackest blacks available on the market today.

Metal under the vinyl seems to have been in pretty good condition. Did you sort out the pully situation or are you waiting for it to come back home? |

The roof was in very good shape. The only rust was in the lower corners of the rear window, which wasn't too hard to fix. I haven't fixed the pulley situation yet. I'll do it when it returns home. I have a bunch of Pontiac accessory drives in storage, so I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

This is going to be a great build! I let be 70’s!
If your not set on a color look at 2012 Dodge Charger black. We had our SRT repainted and the shop used basic body shop black- didn’t match at all! The grill and spoiler were the original paint. Turns out that black has some blue in it and that adds to the darkness/depth. |

The BMW Jet Black has blue in it. It's pretty crazy how adding a little bit of color to black will make it appear blacker. The body shop actually had a BMW representative come in when they got the paint delivered. It's crazy how black it is.

Got some pics from the body shop today. The front sheet metal and doors are being painted.
The last pic is the bottom of the hood, cleared but not wetsanded yet.
