With the cam in the engine and nothing but a dial indicator it would have been very easy to get max lobe lift. Which could have helped identify which cam that was or was not.

I understand that. But you still don't know what it was and if that was the problem. The Pontiac 066 cam was stamped with an N.

Measure lobe height now that it's out of the engine. Post a pic of the lobes...041's are pretty bullish over the nose.

These figures are two separate hand stamped letters because they are not in perfect alignment with each other. It is an I and a V.

Your sure crank was on TDC thruout all your cam timing checks?

I didn't degree the cam that was in it. I will be doing checks on the new one.
