I think what some maybe even here have missed or forgotten was that three on the three was the norm back then, then as time went on and automatics became more popular, people wanting stick would more often than not pay for a floor shift...

Before that, it was a floor shift that was standard. It was a big deal, I think the late 30's, when you could get a column shift car, and get away from the floor shift.

Thought i knew just about everything on a 66 GTO [favorite year].
That one got me

Sure enough, 64 - 65 - 67 , all say 3spd Syncromesh Floor Shift , as standard equipment with GTO [model or model option] on original window stickers.
66 does not.

Wondering how much it was to upgrade from column shift 3spd to floor shift 3spd on a 66 GTO ?

I don't know about other brands, but Ford went from a floor shift in 1939 to a column shift in 1940.

BVZ...I didn't even know Aunt Bee had a Tempest...must've missed that episode. All I ever saw on that show were Fords.

I find it an engineering marvel that someone designed "on the tree" shifters. Can't quite figure out why. My first driving experience was some late 50's Plymouth Behemoth with 3 on the column. Stab and hope. I probably could do a little better now.
