Generations ?
If 64-67 are 1st gens. And 68-72 are 2nd gens, are 73 and 74 3rd gens ?

I would have thought 73 would be 3rd gen. and 74 would be 4th gen. with both cars having different frame structure.
BUT the GTOAA says the 04-06 GTO's are the 4th gen. What's the definition of Generations in the automobile world ?

68-74 X bodies share the same subframe as the 67-69 F bodies. So if you have a 73-74 with the oddball front suspension (tie- rod to tie rod), you can convert it to the cheaper 68-72 set up for a fraction of what it would cost to replace/fix the drag link and inner/outer tie rods.

I did not know that the 73-74 had a unique drag ling/tie-rod assembly and the earlier 68-72 set-up is an easy replacement....good to know! Thanks Rob!
As for the generation demarcations, 2nd generation F-bodies span 1970-81, so encompass a variety of bumpers types, so I would include the 73-74 in with the 68-72's myself. Dennis |

What you will also find is that most of the old Suspension parts book will not show the drag link as a replacable part BUT will show the inner and outer tie rod ends as being a different part number. Been that way for almost 30 years. If you get a chance, look under your car(s) and if its the original set-up, you'll see that the drag link has a "knuckle" where it goes into the pitman arm and I think into the idler arm also. The pitman arm is a non wear item on a 73-74. Look at a 68-72 and you'll see that the drag link is the non wear item (doesn't have any knuckle on it), no knuckles, just the holes for the inner tie rods, idler arm, and pitman arm to mount to it. There use to be a company that could remanufacture the ends of the dragline on these model years but it wasn't cheap, around $500 and not sure if they still do it. You can convert the entire suspension for around $200 or less.

For the Chevrolet A bodies (Chevelle/Malibu) they are considered 3rd gen ('73-77).
