I could put a nuclear power plant under the hood of my GTO ,,get 20 years of power,,go 0-60 in .5 seconds, whisper quiet and never have to change the plugs all for under $ 3000.00. .Would I if I could? Nope. Wouldn't put a electric motor in it either. There seems to be modernized add ons for the Pontiac that can make it start up like the modern FI, reliable electronic ignition compared to old points, roller cams for more power and turbos and superchargers for added power if that's your thing and still be reliable. If your wanting to take a junkyard 400 and put 40lbs of boost to it,go rip some 8's in the 1/4 like people say you can with a LS(lol) then you've drifted out of the street car section into the twilight zone,

In case some people's panties aren't already in a knot, Chevy showed a concept electric 'crate' powerplant in a C-10 pickup at SEMA. The E plant bolts to traditional transmissions, is modular in @400hp motors, and can technically be run in 5x configurations. (5x400=2000hp)
https://media.chevrolet.com/media/us.../1104-e10.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gOOcaEqTvA So taking the thought of 'foreign' powerplants in traditional Pontiacs a step further, now what do you think? Something you would do? .

@HYWSTR455; id like a photo of the motors. Are they typical armature/field or reciprocating?

They use the Bolt motor, but slightly diff packaging. So 'parts' are readily available.
No, didn't look for a hood-up on the 'E-10' pickup, but sure a quick search could find one. EDIT: Here you go... http://www.trucktrend.com/news/1911-...truck-mtsema19 .

I like your style
![]() And that is neat. Its one of those things where you would probably have to drive the thing for 30 years before you made up the cost in gas savings. If or when you can pull them out of wrecked trucks for cheap it would be a more exciting concept to me. Ive always been surprised there hasn't been a bigger push to make semis electric. They get no fuel economy, and at least look like they should be far more gross polluters than 10 passenger cars put together. I suspect it has more to do with not having the electrical infrastructure to make truck stops super charging stations than anything else. We are for sure off topic but I think the original question has been answered so now its just the internet being the internet.

Very few people who have commented really didn't understand the question asked.
It wasn't a question about transplanting an LS into a Pontiac.... It was a question asking if an Old School Pontiac could be built to perform similar to an LS.... As others who have read and understood the question have said, they are two completely different animals. I believe a Pontiac can compete and even surpass the LS up to about 700HP and It would do it with Torque. However as we inch up past 800-900 to over 1000... the Pontiac would be left in the dust. Not because the Pontiac cant be built to make that Power... its because it wont live long making that kind of power. The LS will do it all day reliably. If God had a V8 powered chariot it would be running an LS. The LS is Gods chosen engine. SPEED SAFE, NICK

Before any of you get too giddy about the LS being the "end all be all" of modern engine technology, the Mopar Gen 3 Hemi engines are also serious torque and horsepower producers, and the Ford Coyote, if you spin it fast enough, puts out some power too.
All 3 respond well to BOOST, be it supercharger or turbos, and the bottom end can handle it. Once again, I much prefer an original brand and type of engine in a classic muscle car. I don't mind EFI, and I may eventually go that route on both the 421 in our 65 GTO and the 6bbl in my 440 Roadrunner. BUT first Dick Boneske is going to work his magic on the 3 2bbl Rochesters, modifying them to accommodate the build level of the 421. Likewise, I've already invested appx $900 in Promax parts to make tweaking the 3x 2bbl Holley carbs on my 440 much easier and more productive. While the FiTech 3x2 TBI/EFI system meets and exceeds the horsepower capabilities of the 421, it would be under the capabilities of the 541 I plan on building for the Roadrunner. The FiTech is rated for 600 horsepower. My wife, of course, would prefer the 3x2bbl TBI/EFI system that looks like 3 Rochester 2bbl carbs, and it's a beautiful system, but when it's all said and done costs EIGHT GRAND with new fuel lines, electronic fuel pump, and the system mechanical parts and controller. Someone on this forum is working on a lower cost version that uses the GM EFI computer, and the FiTech 3x2 system is only around $2k. So there are ways to update the older engines, but I actually prefer the sounds, smells, and screwdrivers that make the old mills tick... |

Nope. It would be a HEMI, and here's the proof:

I've got all three, '67 434 (400), '04 5.3L and '15 5.7 hemi. All of them are great engines and punch above their CID. The newer engines win when it comes to emissions, fuel economy and finesse with modern electronics. The Pontiac is the most fun, since there are no digital nannies holding it back with traction control, torque management or throttle by wire response times. There is no latency waiting for half the motor to wake up from 4-cyl mode.
The Pontiac does what it does with raw physics and 3 gears. The newer, smaller engines need 3 computers and 6 or 8 speeds to tear your head off.

We've all heard about the Friday and Monday built cars that assembly line workers build, and the build quality, or lack thereof just prior to, or after a weekend break. I guess that pretty well says what happened as God was resting on the Sabbath after 6 days of hard labor...…... LMAO...…….

Yup, a lot of people in this thread live under a rock. I will be at a cash days this weekend, no Pontiac motors
there. Turbo LS, Coyote supercharged, SBC on juice. All street cars. My friend is the underdog in an 8 car shootout with his high 500 hp SB on a 350 shot of N20. The Coyote stang is full interior, kicking stereo daily street driven ( 8.70 car). As stated the street is the equalizer, the fastest car does not always win. I can tell you I go to a lot of these races, There is a reason why you are seeing more and more "modern motors" and not traditional ones. My Pontiac is real street friendly and can run a single digit pass at the track. It is slow compared to what is out there. I could turn it up but my stock block will not like that. If it was an LS / coyote/hemi 20-30 psi is fine on stock blocks. So the question is yes you can make them run like an LS to a point. It depends on where you want to point. |

One of the things that I admire about Big Chief of Street Outlaws is that he runs a Pontiac motor in his Pontiac, and he is competitive! Many times throughout the years of following the Street Outlaws, he has been THE car to beat.

No doubt he is bad azzz on the street, he rules there. He is just not as fast as those other cars on a prepped track, street and unprepped track he is in there.

If the Camaro had a basic 12 second Pontiac 455 under the hood, it would run 12s and dust the truck. But if the Tundra engine was in a 3400lb car it would run 12 flat and drive tame as can be. Its what new tech does for you. I just wish they made big (4) cams and the rest of the hot rod stuff. I would like to get a wrecking yard Tundra engine and tranny and stick it in a old Chevy car(never a Pontiac) Toyota had a factory drag car with a Tundra engine with the factory 10lb boost blower and a small nitrous hit, ran 8s. If I bought the blower the Truck would have 504 HP and get good gas mileage as long as you kept your foot out of it. The LS like the sbc has had years and years of big time money and factory development. That,s what its all about that. Money, big money and time. But the hard core Pontiac folks putting their hard earned money where their heart is has developed this long dead engine to the point we are at now. Olds, Buick ect fans dearly wish they had what we do. That is what makes us special. At least a Pontiac in a Camaro would be cool. How many times has that been done to us ? What is really, really lame is these so called Pontiac people sticking LS engines in their old Pontiacs. Don''t let the door hit you where the sun don't shine I say. See ya, beat it. Olds and Buick never had a Firebird or Camaro. This makes a huge difference in who and how many had interest over generations. So WHO actually determined what would get built at the factory and by what division?
There were enough birds built that these sporty cars need sporty engines decades later! This fuels the demand. |

You beat it lol
If I put a new cam in a pretty much stock 455 do you think I will net a 70 plus horsepower increase? It reminds me of when hot rod magazine did an article that put a BBC in a Chevette chassis and ran 10 seconds for under 5 grand. Project took about a week to complete. The people that pissed off was unreal as guys spent tens of thousands and were not going very fast. Last edited by P@blo; 12-28-2019 at 09:31 AM. Reason: retracted statement |
