My GE refrigerator is 19 years old. Occasionally, the heater defrost element burns out and it gets the ice build-up shown in the OP's post. Easy $12 fix. I actually keep a spare heater defrost part on hand. Someone once told me most refrigerator problems are due to 1) the heater defrost element, 2) the thermostat, or 3) the timer. All inexpensive and easy repairs.
