Agree. After I switched to his oil pump my issue stopped.
My Luhn pump is this design: http://www.luhnperformance.com/image...ump_03_200.png I might note his pick up design as I pictured was a modified unit from a late model Mustang Cobra, it's no longer available so he now makes his own design as Tom posted. I use a Canton 15-450 pan that was custom modified by canton with a deeper sump to increase the capacity, also the previous Canton oil pick up was properly adjusted for the increased depth. Same oil pan now, same baffles, same trap doors... now with the Luhn pump and it's stable oil pressure no matter how hard you hit it ! .

That's why I was bringing up the volume thing before. You go to external lines that are larger in diameter, and possibly even a 2 filter setup, you need more volume being pumped.
I recall the conversation we had steve c., and the pump thing. .

Regarding the Melling series of Pontiac oil pumps Butler states: Maximum oil flow on a stock-type 60- or 80-psi pump with a stock pickup screen is usually 12-13 gallons per minute (gpm).
As a comparison the Luhn Performance oil pump has a taller gear set from a BBC high volume pump which at 6000 engine rpm flows 19.13 gal/min. Precision states the stock Melling is 11-12 gpm. With their blueprinted oil pumps, during their modifications they go thru the internal passages and 'clean' out the flashing and rate them at about 15 gallons per minute. http://stores.precisionoilpumps.com/pontiac/ Nitemare Performance takes the Melling select pumps and adds their heavy plate, that's it. Oil pressure is dependent upon many things. Volume is the other consideration, the amount of oil that flows through the engine is again dependent upon the application.
Is one more important than the other ? The faster the pump turns, the greater the flow of oil to the engine resulting in more pressure. Think of placing your thumb over the end of a garden hose. The flow of water coming out of the hose is constant but as you press your thumb against the end of the hose the flow is restricted. As you press harder, the pressure against your thumb and the pressure inside the hose goes up. You can Google up more ![]() .

For road racing I would have added an accumulator to begin with. We ran the 3qt systems in the past with the pressures set on the high side so that it would only fill when the oil pump was fairly close to being on the bypass. Can either run the pressures fairly high in the accumulator or go hi tech and set the EPC valve so that it will only recharge/charge at higher pressures, 40-50 psi. In that situation the oil pump bypass oil is mostly what is charging the accumulator. It basically is squirreling away oil (3qts!) for times when the engine is in an awkward position and has oil is pumped up someplace other than the pan. If you already have a remote oil filter installed most of the work is done. Best of the best without going to a dry sump for me would be the Luhn pump with a 3 qt accusump with the EPC valve. One of them we did had a rubber suction line between the pump and the pickup, and the suction screen was attached to the oil pan back on the kick out. We were having trouble on a high bank uncovering the pickup.
I probably would have added the extra quart on oil above where it is at just for a very short trial run to see if it made a difference. Then drained it out and made a decision from there.
