Not necessarily. Desirability is more important than rarity. Square body chevys are through the roof right now, as well as the first gen ford broncos. They made those by the tens of thousands, if not more. I dont think I have seen a 69 trans am sell for more than $200k and thats being generous. If it were a dodge with a one of one unobtanium air in the tires it would be a million dollar car.

I have several motorcycles that are one of only a handfull in the world. They are still valued 100 times less than a comparible Harley or Indian, again of which thousands were made.

I think you are both right! There has to be the desire or how rare it is doesn't matter. An AMC Gremlin with a Levis interior and green exterior may be rare, but without desire, it's worth nothing as it should be. Now take a Pacer, which is not really much different than a Gremlin, and make it a centerpiece in the movie "Dumb and Dumber", and now you have the desire. That Pacer that was worth scrap value of $400.00 is now worth 24K or more. So I believe desire drives the price initially of the car model, then rarity within the model takes it to the next level.

I thought the Fairlady roadsters were called 1600's (fairlady was the the Z car 240+)and Skylines are the same as Infinities in the US. Honestly I have never heard of their domestic names until a couple of years ago. And I remember when Nissans were Datsuns. I suppose its the video game era that has brought these names to the forefront.

That 1600 is properly called the Fairlady in certain markets and was the precursor to the Z cars...which actually are also called Fairlady in some markets.
All of my Z cars have had the Datsun badge. My latest is an '80 model and I think they dumped the Datsun callouts in '82 or somewhere around there.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but I found this cool pic somewhere a while back and saved it. They hit a home run with this body style in my opinion. Also of interest is the Roadster in the background.

The Datsun name completely disappeared in 85. In 84 they used both Datsun and Nissan on the rear hatch. I guess they couldn't decide which to use that year lol

A very good friend of mine will have a 1971 Datsun 240 Z going up for sale in the next few weeks. He has a 71 Pantera on the Hemmings site right now. As soon as it's gone, the Datsun is next. It is a super solid original paint car, never molested or modified. Orange/black. There seems to be allot of interest in these cars here so I will try to give a heads up if interested. The Z is in running condition and complete. I would call it a survivor car I guess.

Both nice cars, I would rank the prelude higher on the desirability scale but this shows what I know! Personally I would not spend more than about 2k on either one but then again they're way down the list of cars I would want to own. The Japanese import market is strong and getting stronger. These are the cars that are going to explode in value in a few years. Might be too late to get into the game with a good deal.
