Some end play is normal (and required) but sounds like you may have too much, I'd have a look at the bearing race in the bowl and the screws that hold the bowl together. The bearing races can loose individual balls and the bowl bolts being untorqued can create some up-down and in out end play. The shop manual is pretty descriptive but needs to be read a few times before attempting a disassembly since there is a lot of steps.
