I also put the lowest advance bushing (18 degrees) in the distributor and boy it smoothed it out. I am a little nervous about hooking up the gauges

I can understand yout nervousness with the hookup considering your previous experieces with old wiring. A friend who has Dakota Digitals in his Chevelle told me they have a good tech line and resources to use on yur own. I suspect you will be OK with this installation.
