I believe the dash bird was for cars without a/c & gauges - to more or less break up the blankness of the dash;
I have seen many additions to the dash, but none quite as subtle as that one!
I actually missed the added bird emblem there by the rear defog switch.

I also thought that only the service replacement tips had the part number stamped on them(??).

My stock formula bezel has AC no gauges with a bird on the left side of the AC vents

exactly my point;
if the emblem wasn't placed there, your dash would have a big area between the gauge pod and the a/c vents;
This area would appear as though something is missing - but the bird emblem breaks it up, and is a nice touch to make it look like nothing is "missing".

For non-Trans Am's without the 'formula' wheel, this emblem (if so equipped) is the only model emblem to be found inside the car;
The Trans Am always had the formula wheel, so there was an emblem there, Trans Am's also always had the bird emblem on the automatic shifter button - if so equipped (the exception is 1973 iirc).

I really like that Pontiac's seemed to try to add little touches that some other manufacturers didn't bother to do - they did this almost right to the end;
If it wasn't a badge-engineered model, they always seemed to take more care;
Even the bottom rung models received this attention;
If you have driven a 1995-2004 Cavalier, and a same era Sunfire you will know what I mean;
Chevy did start adding things to dress up their interiors, but they seemed to often lack the same practicality - the drink holders in these two models contrasts the kind of thing I am attempting to point out quite well;

Cavalier:


Notice how the Cavalier's cup holder places the drink right in front of the radio controls?
Also you can't put the car in park with anything in the cup holder(!?)

Sunfire:


Look how Pontiac offset the cup holder - now you have radio control access with a drink there, and you can even shift without hitting your big gulp
