66 Lemans Cowl Plate Decode
I'm looking at a 66 Lemans and am having a bit of trouble decoding the plate. See attached pic.
I dont see a manufacturing plant. Also, the 122 doesn't seem to be an accessory code. The plate is also set up different that what I've seen. Body and Paint stamps are not right justified. The tag also reads PONTIAC DIV. GENERAL MOTORS CORP instead of “General Motors Corp. According to the VIN, this '66 Lemans is an early production run (number 00959) and the tag calls out the the 5th week of Sept being the production date (9E). Could it be that this was built in Sept 1965 and an earlier 1965 cowl plate was used? |

BF is the code for Fremont plant in California.
Don't know what the 122 means. Fremont didn't use the 5-group setup. It probably is a UPC for something, possibly LeMans?

What is your VIN?
That 09E may be a real early car. Body#31? The 122 may be for the position it was on the assembly line? (122 car down line, including chevy?)

122 may be the manifest number;
This number is found on the Fremont Body Broadcast Sheet and Trim Broadcast Sheet and can be from 4 to 6 digits. It is of no significance today unless Fremont paperwork is found with the car. Even then it will only establish that the build sheet found matches this car. CHEVELLESTUFF ~ The Chevelle Authority Apparently Fremont used two different trim plates in 1966. The early version found on Chevelles and a later version (Jan '66) which is similar to yours. Which brings to question, why did Pontiac (and maybe Olds and Buick) use the later version from the beginning of production? http://chevellestuff.net/qd/tags/1966/bf/bf_decode.htm

VIN is 237676Z00959. Z being Freemont and 959th produced. That would make sense given the production month on the body plate.

IIRC, the #31 after BF would indicate the 31st LeMans convertible body built at Fremont
