Went to put new vent knobs on and pushed, rubber mallet and still couldn't get them on past the first barb. So I took a 3/16 drill bit, mounted upright in a vice and by hand turned out the hole in the plastic knob by hand turning the knob over the bit by hand to clean it out. Did this a couple times each knob.
Now they pushed on and about 10 hits with the rubber mallet and tapped it on. Looks good. And they aren't coming off.
