Looks like a great example of target fixation. He was looking at the light pole so as not to hit it. ALWAYS look where you want to go, not what you want to avoid.

A few years ago I was driving through the Oregon Cascades. It was a two lane State Hwy that we drove all the time. We didn't see the event, just the aftermath. A Walmart semi was going down the road when a Suburban pulled out in front of him. The semi crossed over the oncoming lane and went into the forest. The trees there are all mature Douglas firs, many of which are huge. I don't know if it was just luck or incredible driving but the Semi came to a stop about 150 feet into the forest. The cab was 100% intact. Somehow, he missed all the big trees. Unbelievable.

When I first got into high performance cars in the early 80s, all of the old timers used to get on to me and tell me not buy those old high performance cars. They sad”there is no place to drive them”. Back then I didn’t understand what they were trying to tell me, but I understand today that is dangerous to turn them loose on a public road. I hope everyone made it through that wreck.

I teach my kids this all the time , works for skiing. Snowboarding, dirt bikes etc
But I preach it for driving also always look where you want to go !

I put my car through it's paces at the appropriate time and place. This person seemed kind of out of control. Maybe intoxicated or having a mental health crisis, who knows. The whole thing is sad.

This exact thing could be done with like a ford fusion or some other mediocre car or truck in this case…you can drive above your talent. It’s not the car but the idiot behind the wheel. Know your capabilities.

Yea, certain that most PY folks here have owned large CID V8 pontiacs their whole life and did not have this "driving experience" on modern tires.

However, Bias-ply tires were from the devil.

The driver here may (or not) have another performance car significantly newer with far more forgiving handling when pushed hard.
