Direct injection engines suffered from "LSPI" - Low Speed Pre-Ignition.
Caused by the additive packages used, this has been fix. Which is why it's critical to use the correct spec oil in late-model cars. For the folks that insist "mixing up" your own oil, you need to read and understand the mess you are doing. Send some un-used new "whatever brand" oil to oil analysis, then send them you mixed up concoction - see what the reports show. Yes - buy the right oil and leave it alone.....I couldn't agree more. No race oil on the street, mixing up crap, listening to the "oil additive" sales gimmicks. Bob |

You guys really crack me up. Direct port injection is about the only scenario where you can get low-speed preignition and does not apply here. So why even use it as an example, let alone repeat it? A room full of soapboxes and clapping.
The HDEO I use has the API SN rating for use in gasoline engines. Cams and tappets, is there something I am missing here? Also, since I know what the new oil and additive contains, why would I pay someone to have it analyzed? I'd put some scratch on seeing what was going on with the oil after the piss gets beat out of it for a while though. A guy can read three different papers from the same lubricant company, and they will contradict themselves more than once. Engineers. The guys that formulate the stuff. Imagine that. Prior to the Red Line I added the EOS and no shark bites so far. Might have to market these anti-shark attack rings just yet... |

and as soon as you "mix up" anything, the base additive package is toast.
Go ahead, send in your base SN oil, mix in whatever you want, run it and send the used oil for analysis. Might surprise you. |
