I've had hip issues for probably 30 years. My right hip was replaced in 2018, but my left hip has been telling me it wasn't happy too. I finally went through with surgery on my left hip about a week ago. The first week was rough, but the worst is over.

Hope it works out well for you. My son (49) is going for his 3rd replacement soon. He fell a few months back and wrecked his femur and broke his previously replaced hip. The other side has been flawless for the last 10 years.

My wife has had both her hips replaced (2013 and 2020) and I’ll probably get my other knee replaced next year. You really need to keep up with issues like the is if you want to stay moving and enjoy life!

Had my right hip replaced in April, and I kick myself for not doing it sooner than I did. An outpatient procedure...operation around noon, home by 5pm ! PT started immediately at home and then a PT facility for a brief stint.

I had my left hip done in 2018, came out very well. For the most part, I came out better to wait. I looked at having my hip replaced in the early 2000s. At that time, the doctor I was seeing was pushing metal on metal hip replacements. Then about 4 - 5 years ago, I started seeing all kinds of legal advertisements for people who had metal on metal hip replacement. It seems the plating on the metals was wearing off, causing heavy metals to enter the blood stream. Bone cancer, congestive heart failure, liver failure, and a number of other issues were the results of wear. When I decided it was finally time to get it replaced, I changed doctors and got a better option.

It was done as outpatient. I was not put under full anesthesia. The doctor gave me a nerve block in conjunction with the Michael Jackson juice. The nerve block lasted about two days. So days 3 - 5 were worse than days 1 & 2.

So overall, I'm pretty happy with the outcome so far. My right hip is totally pain free, but it took a few months to get there.

Did you have it done at Duke? That seems to be the go-to for people east of you.

Yes, I went to North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic, with the actual surgery being done at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham. The NC Orthopaedic Clinic is part of the Duke system. Dr. Brekke did my surgery this time. I used the same clinic the first time, but Dr. Kelley (now retired) was the surgeon. Both were great.

After I went on Medicare, I started changing over to Duke doctors only. It's so easy to see records, X-rays, and charts that are done by Duke doctors.
