Well, I have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that I was unable to dislodge any of the coolant ports, so was unable to drain any of the coolant. The good news is that, as I hope to be able to plumb in that fuel line tomorrow, tomorrow may very well be E-Day. Rachelsdad is a genius again, I don't know why I didn't think of using fuel line to connect the fuel line. I've got two spare hose clamps already, so if I can find a male and a female fitting, I'll be set. (Except I still haven't found a fuel filter? Unless it's behind a wheel, I've traced the whole fuel line from tank to carburetor). Did some cleaning around the trunk and glove box, lubricated the glove box lock (it works now) and troubleshot the glove box light. Turns out, out of two screws, it was missing the one that gave it a secure ground - so I switched around the one remaining screw and it works perfectly now. I'll pick up a replacement for the second one at Ace tomorrow if I can find one. Good thing I changed the oil, as it was all black. I'll change it again in 1000 miles or so, just to get rid of any remaining goop and nonsense. It was a pretty straightforward process, remove bolts, drain, replace, and refill. I didn't know if it would be bad pour all 6qts into one side, so I put 3qts into each side, and reinstalled the breather caps. One of the tabs was broken on the right cap, but it seems to be holding fine, so I won't worry about it. On the windshield wipers: yes, absolutely, if I had the vacuum wipers I wouldn't be looking to change, but that part seems to be simply missing. I don't know how possible it is to find a replacement vacuum 'motor,' though if I could, it would make it easier to connect everything up. I live in Phoenix, so rain is quite uncommon, but I do think I should have them working, in case. Today's two questions: 1. Assuming I get the fuel line connected, should I proceed with E-Day tomorrow despite not having flushed the coolant? Anything else I should know about the startup procedure, and anything I should watch/listen for if the engine runs? 2. How do I prime the carburetor? |

Went to about four different stores today on the way to/from work, and got the pieces I needed to rerun the "always on" 12v wire (yes, it was the original yellow one, and it was so old that the insulation cracked when I bent it). At one point, the insulation had been heated or abraded away by something, and this seems not very recent, as the copper was well-oxidized. Seeing that is what determined me to replace this line.
So, a 3' length of 8 gauge 19 strand, one small ring terminal for the junction block side, and one 3/8" ring terminal for the solenoid side, and all was in order. I gently refit the starter to see if that fixed any issues, and glory-hallelujah, it fired right up. A little love and a few secured connections, and away it went. "But Parkman51," I hear you ask, "What about that broken junction block? How did you get it working without the new one having come in yet?" Well, with another of my patent 'if it's stupid and it works' stopgaps. Observe the Junction (Literal) Block. Anyway, now that cranking the engine is back on the menu, I can return to my old nemesis, the FUEL-PUMP. Hopefully I'll have some updates on that front for you tomorrow, but we shall see. |

Sorry; been traveling for a convention which wore me out, and then the fun which so many of us experienced at the beginning of last week with airline schedules... Ugh. Finally back to feeling more like myself, and getting out and under the hood of my own '56 project...

Finally, we determined that my heavy duty starter was simply no longer so "heavy duty," so we pulled it and took it to a reputable local rebuilder. It now sings. The moral of the story? Never underestimate the effects of time on electrical components. I'll bet that if your voltage is good and your solenoid is giving a real "click!" (as opposed to an anemic "tick!"), your starter just needs a rebuild. You probably got the last you were going to get out of it on your first attempts to start the car. No additional comments on wiring or fuel filters; I think that ground has been pretty well covered. Quote:

I have a set of 8-lugs on my '63. When I got my wheels, rims, and center caps, the guy from whom I purchased them told me that he'd pulled them off of a Grand Prix sitting up to its beltline in mud. The glass beader did a phenomenal job on the aluminum wheels (though many years later, of course, the corrosion between the cast iron drums and the aluminum wheels got the better of them, so they've been re-done). I wire wheeled the rims, primed, and painted them the proper color, which has held up well for several decades, now. The point of all of this is that rims are fairly solid, and moisture generally doesn't get between inflated tires and the steel, so what you see on the outside is generally not indicative of the overall condition of the rim, and usually more cosmetic than anything else. As I say, you'll know more when you get the tire dismounted. You're putting a lot into keeping this car not only period-correct but correct-correct. Are you sure you want to put thin whitewalls on it vs ordering a set of (more) correct tires from Coker or Lucas or some such? (I just got a set of Coker Classic Star Series bias-look radials for my '63, and they look and drive quite well.)

Larry, that's kind of what I suspected - that the filter wouldn't work properly on its side. I'll try plumbing the whole thing with hose for now, making sure to keep it out of contact with the engine. Modifying the new metal line will be a project for the future.
Today I studied how to replace the belts: tomorrow, I'll do an auto parts run, to pick up the handful of things I need for the fuel line and some belts. Ideally with all that done I should be able to draw gas straight from the tank and let the car idle for a few minutes. I also sent an email to Ames, to see if they've got a replacement part for whatever-is-missing-on-the-trunk-lid. Only one question today: Once the fuel system is put together and functional, the only thing necessary to put the car in a driveable state is the master cylinder. If the brakes are going to need any additional work, I'd like to find that out and do it now, so that the master cylinder will be the last piece of the puzzle. I plan to have the wheels off sometime this week for new tires, so what should I check for? Is there anything I can assume I need, just by default?
