among my collection is a pretty rare 79 TA. I know, they made a million 79 TAs but, this one is a black bird special edition with WS6 and it was the only way one could get a TA in 79 with a Pontiac V8 and an automatic. It is a 301 and I understand only about 600 were made this way.
Not sure when I'll build it but, always planned to install a 455. But, with all the interest and development in 301s, am thinking now- It may be cooler to build the original 301 using alum heads ,a custom narrower intake and a 3.75 or 4" crank. That would make a nice street engine bolted to a 700r4 and retain the orignal block! the 301 is already much lighter than a 350-400 but, adding alum heads would make it even lighter and would have to handle and brake even better! Just a thought but, it is interesting what is being done with 301s these days

360 1979 Y84 Special Editions made with the L37 301 and automatic. Fewer would have WS6 as well. Pretty spoofy spec T/A. The only thing rarer is a 1979 Y84 L37 301 4-speed, with 213 of those made.
