Got the motor in the Formula today
Always a fight with the engine mounts Thanks to a couple buddy’s who stopped by Hope to have it running by the weekend

Got my two strong-arm sons to set the bellhousing/tranny assembly back into the '26 tonight. The transmission is fine, so it wasn't contributing to the driveline noise- which may be totally due to the loose hub-to-wood-spokes bolts of the left rear wheel (still waiting for custom threads to be machined in the wheel puller I built). Taking the tranny out wasn't wasted effort, as the clutch disk was worn down to the rivets, so I had it refaced. The clutch itself was fine- until I broke it! The flywheel has three dowel pins that engage with slots in the pressure plate- except if you misalign it and start tightening the bolts, as I did. No clutch to be found, so I had the cast pressure plate welded, which warped the heck out of it- needing considerable machining to correct. But the clutch cover (also an iron casting) could not be corrected if warped that badly. So I had the broken pieces just tacked in place while clamped to a flat plate. Then made 1/4" steel strap pieces to go under mount bolts and cover the broken areas. All I can do now is cross my fingers that it might survive....

Anybody else on this planet campaign a M/T hemi Pontiac for eleven seasons? ... or has built a record breaking DOHC hemi four cylinder Pontiac? ... or has driven a couple laps of Nuerburgring with Tri-Power Pontiac power?(back in 1967) ... or has a Pontiac born the same year as Jim Wangers? (1926}

I removed my tri power carbs from my 64 to rebuild.

Test drove the '26 today- the clutch is surviving okay and the chatter is gone. But the drivetrain is just as noisy as before.
 I guess the differential needs to come out- anybody versed in spiral bevel gears?

My father and I installed the folding top almost 30 years ago - other than being a bit faded it has held up well. I picked up this plastic cleaner/treatment after noting it does not contain silicone for the princely sum of 8€.
It worked quite well, but will require another application I think. It does not leave a greasy film like Armor-All and a few others I could name. I ran across this on a drive to town. No, it is not a giant swimming pool but a portable bullring. Not something you run across everyday in the USA. |
