I always do base clear, holds up better with high UV exposure. I've found that scratch repair is easier, a quick wet sand and reclear the panel if it's deep enough.

I just painted these two trucks with single stage. With aftermarket clear it’s not a matter of if, but when it starts to peel if it’s not garage kept.

I've had all 3 types of paint jobs, lacquer, base/clear, and single stage.
I agree, nothing looks like what lacquer does, but a lot of people won't use it anymore. The T/A had a lacquer job done in the early 80s, and lasted with no issues for over 10 years. I had it painted basically just to change colors, and then painted again 1.5 years ago. The 442 is black, and painter insisted on SPI single stage, and it turned out fantastic. That was done as a 'scuff & spray' and the blemishes it has is from lack of good prep, but still looks great. The GTO and now the T/A, both are base/clear. The GTO wish I would have gone single stage, but it is what it is. The T/A was sprayed base/clear because of the specific color I wanted was only available from PPG due to the mica used, and is a limited Jag color. Not cheap ($1900 gal), but it was well worth it. .
