Here she is after a good waxing. It cleaned up nicely. It has a hunk of bondo on the passenger 1/4 but it's not too thick, just OLD. This car also has a decent amount of rust but none look too hard to repair. I've never done it before but I can weld so I'm not too scared.
I hooked the pump up to a can and it wouldn't pump any gas. I ordered a new fuel pump and hopefully that will get it running. I think next is to clean up the interior. It's so dirty inside. I'm gunna pull the seats out, POR15 the floors and put the seats and door panels back in. After that I'll probably start doing some body work. Here she is That freshly rebuilt Carter sure looks out of place!!!

a GENERATOR-air car...not too common...If originality matters, have the master cylinder on the car rebuilt (sleeved, etc.) - it looks like the OEM unit (with the thumb screw) and they are not being reproduced.
(or if you don't want it, I'll take it off your hands! ) |

My 62 GP is a generator-A/C car. I would be interested in some close-up pictures of the water pump pulley and the dip stick area.
BTW, if you do not keep the generator, those brackets a very rare. |

I'd like to keep the generator. They look so much cooler than alternators!
Who rebuilds master cylinders? I need the MC on my 59 rebuilt also

Nice car!! I had a white '62 with the saddle-colored interior. I noticed the A/C compressor is missing but the brackets on the engine and the rest of the A/C system appear to be there. If it still has the aluminum four-core radiator, you may want to find a compressor and revive the system.
One point I haven't seen mentioned in this thread concerning Grand Prix vs. Catalina is that the Grand Prix in '62 sat ONE INCH lower than the Catalina. The body dimensions, however, including roofline were identical.

My car was also missing the A/C compressor. But they are easy to find. The condenser was in the car, but it was not in good condition. I had a new one built using my old brackets. It turned out great.

In the tan color the interior might look plain, but cleaned up it will look very classy. I would keep the interior the way it is. It looks like the interior is in great shape I would clean it and run it as it is. I would also start by running the engine on some gas out of a gas can so you know that the gas is good. That car is going to look great, 62s have always been my favorite of the early GPs.

White Post is a good suggestion; for the brake booster I suggest "Booster Dewey" (try a google search), who's located somewhere in the Pacific Northleft.
And speaking of boosters, when you are first trying to get the beast to fire, in addition to fresh, known gasloline, disconnect (and cap off) the big vacuum line between the carb and the brake booster. The reason being that if the rubber diaphragm inside is ruptured (and it probably IS) you will avoid the major-league vacuum leak it will present if left connected. |

Nice car. Are you going to further restore it, or drive it as is?

There are a couple of those old type master Cyls on E-Bay right now. Search 63 Pontiac or 1963 Pontiac and you will find them. Reasonable price. Especially compared to a White Post resto.

Thanks for all your help! The first thing I want to do is get this damn motor running. I bought that "1962 Carter" off ebay and when I got it yesterday it had a tag on it that said "1961 PontiacCarter blah blah blah" Oh well, who cares? I disconnected the hose going to the tank (by the pump) and put a gas can under it and no gas. I put a new fuel pump in it, NO GAS. Can Anyone explain what's happening? Could the cam lobe be worn down? Or does it have an eccentric under the timing cover? I also noticed that one of the fuel pump bolt holes is stripped. It seems to seat tightly but could a small leak right there cause a problem?
Anyway, after it's running I'm planning on doing some body work and getting it in primer until I figure out what color I want to paint it. I think white would be cool and the brown interior wouldn't look so bad. All the AC parts are there except the compressor. I'm planning on making this my go-fast car so all the AC parts and console will probably come out and be sold. I'm not too worried about the interior. With the exception of the dash it's all pretty nice so I'm gunna keep it all stock. I want to get the brakes done ASAICAI (as soon as I can afford it)! I already cleaned up the spare bumper and put it on. It looks better than it did. I'm going to patch a few small rust spots on my spare fender and get that primed here pretty soon. So no, this car will not be fully restored, but yes it will be cleaned up and made a lot nicer that it is now and a lot faster than it was from the factory. I'm still looking for some time to drop off my motor at Pontiac Larrys so he can start the stroking process!!!

Check you fuel lines I'll bet one of them's rotted off or the tank's full of rust.
There is an eccentric on the end of the cam, Occaisionally they loosen up.

Your fuel pump diaphragm may be bad also.

"looking for some time to drop off my motor at Pontiac Larrys so he can start the stroking process!!!" -PH
Uhh, yeah. I am walking away from that one...anyway, with a stripped thread (and therefore a loose bolt) it is possible that the fuel pump housing is actually rocking enough side to side on the timing cover thus offsetting the normal pumping of the lever, not developing enough suction and thus not drawing up any go-juice. Also, unless you prime the bowl of the carb to have a running engine REALLY draw fuel up the main fuel line for the first time (assuming it's not rusted as mentioned or plugged by some ambitious dirt-dauber), you may not get enough draw from the cranking speed of the starter. |

I'm not sure about it, but I thought the '62 GP's had the larger tunnel for the Hydro and the Cats had the smaller one for the Slim-Jim. That would mean the T400 would fit the GP and the Cat would need the T350. That might make a difference as far as which body you used. Does anyone know if that's true or not?
Otherwise, you can turn a GP into a Cat or vice-versa simply by the trim pieces. You also need the floor mounts for the buckets for a Catalina

The body dimensions for the '62 Grand Prix and Catalina are the same, including the transmission tunnel. They both came with Slim-Jims. Only the Star Chief and Bonneville used the 4 speed Jetaway Hydramatic.
As some of you already know, the Catalina is one inch higher than the Grand Prix, but this is due to suspension mods, not the body. As several have stated, it doesn't take much hammering to make the TH400 fit the '62Grand Prix tunnel. The area that interferes is where the tailshaft piece bolts to the transmission body. The two upper bolt bosses hit the tunnel. If you're careful, the hammering will not cause problems with the console fitting over the tunnel.

The lines are probably rotted and the fuel tank is probably full of rust, that's why I ran the new pump to a gas can with a new 8" long rubber hose.
Maybe cranking it is not getting it enough gas. I'll try to get it to run off some ether or somethin and see if she'll spit up some gas. If no luck there, then I'll check that eccentric. Thanks guys
