I firmly believe that most auctions are "boosted" by folks that are planted in the audience. It would be much worse with an on-line auction because they wouldn't be present so you could see the same persons "pushing" items to higher selling prices.....FWIW....

The auction we had 40 yrs ago of antiques that we didnt want with house purchase seemed crazy also. The antiques, glassware and furniture went for nominal prices but the odd hardware, paint ,etc went for seemingly higher prices than there worth. We did not have any 'ringers'. That's us though. The auctioneer was very good.
