I'm trying to figure the best way to ship an axle assembly (drum to drum, 1967 Skylark). I think it's too big for UPS. I searched the forum but didn't find much on truck freight. I'd appreciate some suggestions if anybody has had a good (or bad) experience. Or point me to a thread if this has already been discussed. Thanks. TJ

if you are near an amtrak station they are reasonable also. just make sure that it is a large freight terminal.

I was looking at shipping a rear end last year. The best price I could find was atForward Air. You would have to strap it to a pallet and get it to a terminal.

I shipped a block, heads, AND rear diff by the same method...strapped to a pallet. But I took it to get it weighed at a truck scale first. Deduct empty truck weight from loaded weight, and you`ll know how much it weighs. If a shipper charges by the pound.....I suspect HIS scales may be out of adjustment, LOL!

I have shipped many rearends, always use truck freight and strap it to a pallet or build crate around it. No problems yet. I have used R&L Carriers and several others.Reasonable rates and delivery time comparable to UPS.

Nothing is ever that easy. OK, so it turns out his scales were off and UPS said it weighs 190, not 150. So I'm back to the drawing board. I knew I should have waited till it arrived before I posted that last one....

Teej,
A liitle know shipper for big parts is Grey Hound. They are slower then say a UPS type, but I have had NO troubles with them. Down side is if your or the reciever is not very near a "Main" depot as they don't ship to all sub/smaller depots. I have also used AFB, I had to strap it to a pallet and get it to them, but it was a good deal. Good Luck.

Thanks for all your suggestions, it kept me shopping around instead of just accepting my first thoughts/offers.
Turns out the rear end came up right under the 150 lb limit and I'm getting it shipped UPS ground for $103. That's to my residence, (no terminal pickup), and it included about $800 insurance. I think I could have saved $10 to pick it up or ship it to a business, but didn't want to bother. Forward Air was definitely the cheapest if you have terminals in your area. Greyhound would have also been cheap, but they have a 100 lb limit at most terminals in my area. Thanks again. I'll post if any 'issues' arise with this method. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to getting a set of 3.55s under my car next week.

You're right, Forward Air is definitely cheaper. Unfortunately it didn't have a terminal near the pick up point. Closest one was 75 miles. But here are some prices I came across. (No response from Amtrak)
Terminal to Terminal (Hagerstown MD to Rockledge FL) Roadway $215 Highway Freight $155 Forward Air (Baltimore to Orlando) $68

i needed to ship a self serve stainless steel vacuum back to the manufacturer for warranty work. going by the manufacturer's weight i was quoted $450.00
by trucking companies because i was a one time user. contacted the manufacturer and they agreed to place a pickup call on my behalf and bill me for the shipping charges. $150.00..because they ship frequently. you might try hooking up with someone that ships a lot. they get a pretty good break on charges. david |
