Anyone had any luck Re-Dying Vinyl using the dye that is sold in the Spray Cans? I have a Automatic Console and some other parts that need to be re-dyed. The Console from a Black color to my Teal Blue original color. Any tips anyone could offer for me to get a good long lasting bond to the surface?

I used vinyl dye on some seat belts a few years ago to re-color some faded belts. Mine were Aqua / Teal also. I don't think that it would work to change colors, but to restore some faded belts it worked pretty well. Mine had a few rust stains on them and the rust just kept coming through the dye no matter how many coats I put on. Other than not eliminating the rust it worked great!

I went to my local ppg guy and gave him the code for my interior color...he said it cannot be made due to no laquer being available...he called ppg and they agreed with him...cannot duplicate it! How do you guys get the dye in custom colors?

FWIW, my paint and body guy swears by Plastic Adhesion Promoter, an aerosol made by SEM Products of Charlotte, NC, and carrying their product ID 39863.
He said this stuff makes paint stick to anything plastic, from dashboard bezels to vinyl console pads. I got a 14.75 oz. can at my local paint and body supply store for less than $5. I think O'Reilly's might carry it; I saw some SEM products there recently.

I purchased mine from Original Parts Group. But they just ran out of my color and said they will no longer carry it in stock. They do have a pretty good selection of Vinyl Dies and Lacquers.

The paint/body guy I cited swears by the stuff for prepping Firebird interiors to be dyed.
I have, as yet, no personal experience, but, after all, vinyl is essentially a flexible plastic, isn't it?

Where exactly did you purchase your Dye at? Did you do anything special to prep the Seatbelts prior to spraying them?

Do you think that Type of Spray/Dye would work on the Seatbelts? I have a set of Teal Blue Seatbelts and they have faded over the years and I want to re-dye them. Thank you for all of your input..Jim

I was skeptical about the vinyl dye spray too. I sprayed my automatic consol and it did come out very well. It is three years old now and still looks as good. Clean it, use the prep spray, and it will work well.

I buy mine from Metro Mustang. YOu can find their website if you do a google search.
They are great to deal with and give me excellent service. I didn't do anything special to the belts other than to scrub them good and let them dry for about 2 days prior to spraying them. |

I used the vinyl dye from Metro Mustang (look them up on Yahoo) and I did the EXACT thing that you are talking about! I changed a 68 auto console and lid from black to teal/aqua and it came out PERFECT!!!! I also did my replacement dash pad and it also came out PERFECT! Performance Years sells the dye also, but I've only used the MEtro Mustang stuff and am completely thrilled with the results!
You need to clean the vinyl really well with a strong cleaner. Then let it dry for 24 hours. Then spray it with the Vinyl Prep spray primer (also from Metro Mustang). Then spray it with the actual color dye. I also clear coated mine with a satin finish clearcoat, but you don't really need to do that. I made sure that I sprayd the console in an area where there wasn't any wind or dust flying around. You have to use a LOT of the dye. Probably 3 full cans of dye to get it really nice.
