Hey Gang,
I'm in the middle of a tranny conversion on the 65 GTO conv. I need to know what slip yoke I need and what ujoint combination. I was told turbo 350 slip yoke is the same as 700r4 and I could shorten my current driveshaft and use a combination ujoint to tie it all together. Your ideas would be appriciated. current tranny is st300 if that matters. Thanks, Steve
One more thing has anyone used the bowtieoverdrives.com crossmember for the 700 conversion, its for a 65 conv. chevelle but I was told it will work. If not any confirmed re-positioning of the existing croossmember been done. And difficulty rating...Thanks again

The 700's and 4L60's use the same output shaft as the TH350's. They are just under 3" longer overall and the mount is back a couple of inches. I've always just moved the mount itself or the crossmember that holds it, really no big deal on most chassis.....Cliff

Steve, I did a 700R4 conversion in my 64 Tempest just a couple of weeks ago. It is behind a 421 Tri Power. I used Bowties crossmember and it worked great. The TV cable setup was a bit of a pain with the tripower but all is working well now. The trans adapter made the boltup to the Pontiac engine a breeze. I used the TH350 yoke, stock 1310 u joints and had my shaft shortened and balanced. If I can be of any other help send an email.

does this adapter have provision for mounting the early (62) type starter that normally bolts to the trans? ive been looking for a good change out for the old slim-jim. i have a junkyard so 700s are easy to come by. it's sounds like a neat swap. where can i get the adarter? t.i.a., don

Don,

The only 700R/BOP adapters that I am aware of Do Not have provisions to mount a starter. They are about 1/4" thick steel plates with the missing 10 and 2 o'clock attachment points for the trans and require a block mounted starter. I have this combo in my signature GTO below.

when I swapped to a th400 in my 65 conv we had to fabricate and weld crossmember attachment plates to the frame to mount the tranny, since the frame is boxed I couldnt just slide the x-member back and drill holes. I dont know how much you need to allow for but it is something to think about. convertible frames are always boxed and use a different crossmember than coupes, htops.

I have a 71 Firebird that I did a 700 conversion about 1 1/2 years ago (from a tired TH350). I had to use a spacer plate and relocate the crossmount. I drilled new holes for the relocate. I believe I was able to use the same #u-joints. The only problem I have is I am still running the 270 rear, and it doesn't pull worth a s#@* anymore. I am looking for gears in the 340 range to fix this. There is a guy in Canada I know, and he has told me that he uses some sort of pulley system and can get rid of the electronics. I have not had the oportunity to press him furthure on this, but will let all know when I find out. He is THE HOT ROD GOD to take your ride to when in need of a tune up though. Good luck
