I have a new to me 78. Bought it off a buddy. He is the 2nd owner. He did not know much about it. GUy before him did all the work!
Anyways, How can I tell if it is a WS6/7? The Engine has been re-done 2 times. Beautiful car. White with Red/Black/Charcoal Graphics. Says 6.6 T/A on The Shaker. Not factory Rims, but the 26 year old T-tops are still in great shape. Not much body damage. Few key marks, and one spot of rust! Just have to hop on the brakes and the carb. Brakes seem to have a bad vacum line. I hope that is all it is!!! Thanks in advance everyone! |

You can tell if its a real TA 6.6 by the 2 letter engine code next to the timing cover. Should also have 6X-4 heads. 4 is stamped on boss behind A/C bracket bosses near the valve cover.
WS6 used white nylon sway bar bushings at the front sway bar ends to the control arms. Also a larger rear bar. Measure the rear bar diameter.

Engine code is Z. That's for sure.
It is an Automatic. It had the Hurst Dual Gate Shifter. Not sure if that was stock or not. DId they make Auto WS6's? |

You could get the 220 hores motor with the auto in 78, with or w/out the ws6 option. I don't think the used the nylon front sway bar bushings till 79. The only way to know if it's a ws6 car is to find the build sheet on the car. The sway bars could have been changed over the last 26 years. Good luck

AS far as the W6 If U look at the tire data on the drivers door and it reads a metric # 215R70 15 it's a WS6. if D/15 it's not. Sounds like mine. Just about all my vac lines where bad ,cracked ends splits whatever, also the gaskets in the carbuator had shunk so all the bolt(screws) holding it together where loose , after tightening it was all that was needed. Happy burnouts

Hard to beat PHS. WS6 was a suspension option including 8" honeycombs, larger rear sway bar, different rear spring front eye busings. Different nylon front bushings and a different steering box that was a fixed ratio not variable.
Until about March 1978 you could get the auto with a 220 hp motor , after that just with a 4 speed. I missed out by 1 month! Also the car was NOT shipped with the WS6 as ordered. Took it anyway as I couldn't wait another 3 months. Stil in the garage!

I think the WS7 option appeared in 79 when GM started using 4 wheel disk on the WS6 package, & then they ran out of rear ends. So they slapped drums back in those WS6 cars & called it WS7. I read that somewhere........
W72 auto cars should have a X7 block code. YA, or YU for standard L78 400
