Alright, I'm still new at this so bear with me..
77 TA, W72 (Pontiac 400) stock.

1. Engine runs perfect when warm (even passes emissions)
2. Runs terrible when cold

By terrible I mean:

1. Engine shakes like a mofo
2. Sounds really really bad (like a 2 stroke)
3. dumping a good amount of gas out the back

Things I've done:

1. Choke looks to be working.. (opens as it warms up)

2. New wires, coil, plugs, cap, timing is good when warm

I didn't notice this until winter time of course.
I'm thinking maybe the carb needs a rebuild? Maybe the floats are stuck?

Choke pulloff?
The choke plate should fully close for starting then open slightly after the engine starts to permit enough air for cold running. Then it should slowly open all the way as the engine warms.
The choke pull off is actuated by a vacuum diaphragm and linkage to the choke plate.

It's the carb, specifically the choke. Try opening it up a little bit when it's cold to allow more air in.
