The chrome trim around my LeMans tail lights had some corrision so I have taken one apart. There is some type of gasket between the lense and the metal piece it mounts to. Not the big rubber gasket that goes around the braket. This gasket is grey and kinda soft like play-dough, looks like it is to seal the lense and blocks off the back-up light too. What is this material and where do I get it? J.R.

You might check your local auto parts stores, particularly ones that carry a lot of body repair supplies. I found some stuff called strip caulk made by 3M. It is a black, somewhat sticky material that is like putty. It comes in thin strips about a foot long but you can roll and stretch these as needed. It's easily shaped and can be used to make all kinds of thin body gaskets. Once you find the stuff and begin using it you'll find a lot more uses for it. Hope this helps.

The gasket that you are looking for that goes behind the tail light lenses on the '67 LeMans are a unique gasket that is not being reproduced. Most used ones crumble when the tail lights are disassembled. I have found a couple of good ones by buying used tail light assemblies where the gasket was still usable.

Several years ago I found a pair of NOS ones that went on my '67 LeMans.

Also, I don't believe that strip caulk would be a good substitute in this application.

I would try to find some good used ones.
