I'm so tired of this fuel injection sh*t, that I've got everything else on the engine except that and a few things. Is it a big step to swap over to a carb setup? I mean with all the electrical bullsh*t and all. Would any of the computer stuff need to be changed? It has too right?

you'll need to change the ecm,the harness, intake, fuel pump[or regulate it]and maybe the dist[ i'm not sure if the module is the same or not].

if you're going to swap it out i'd go to a tbi setup instead of the tpi. you'll still need to change the above but the system is much simpler and less hassle in the long run.

check the tpi harness at the rear of the intake plenum and look for "rub throughs" in the harness. trouble in this area was common after the intake had been off once.

I considered TBI, but with the Carb setup, I can get that for free off of either a '79 Corvette or a Camaro my buddy has. Both have the same engine and the Camaro has the Stroker as well. Is it hard to do myself or would I need some pro. help? Like, you need to change the intake, harness but what about the ecm. Why change that? You mean the whole thing or just programming it?

if you're going to use a 79 intake and carb you won't need to use any of the electronics.

this was my misunderstanding. i thought you were talking about an electronic carb system.

with the 79 you'll need to change the intake, carb, and distributor. it's a simple swap.

the injection harness should be seperate from the distr power,guages and charging harness and will enter the interior on the pass side.

So what do I have to do with the Distributor? Can I use the one thats on the Vette now? Or will that f*ck up the timing and sh*t?

you'll need to use a non computerized distributor. a standard hei from the donor car will work.

before you do all of this, you realise that the car won't pass an emmison test don't you?

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't swaping the intake, carb, distributor from the 1979 Vete or camaro and getting a custom chip burnt from Superchips along with the emissions legal 1986 headers and o2 sensor let him pass emmisions?? and solve his fuel injection problems. It would be just like a 1982 carbed car right?

I mean its actually what you are doing bringing the car back to 1982 before the went to any style of FI TBI or TPI. Plus a custom burnt chip can make up any slack from the conversion, right??? We don't have emmisions here so I am curious.

mini dude, he's talking about using a 79 intake and carb. the electronics didn't come out until 1981 in most cases. 1980 in very limited applications.

the 79 parts will be the same as a 74- 79 car. there'll be no need for a chip.

if his state does a visual inspection of the emissions and the inspector knows what he/she is looking for the car won't pass.

i wanted him to be aware of this before he converts the car. mike

Well, I'm here in Toronto Canada. I don't think there are any laws for this, except that it needs to be certified and e-tested. I can get both done easily. I just needed to know if the TPI to Carb setup would work is all. So I don't need to change any computer related stuff, and just change the obvious? Taking the Distributor from the Vette work? Easy Install? How long would all this take roughly? Can't wait till my t/a is back on the road! Thanks!

the only other thing you may run into is the bolt pattern for the intake may be different if the heads are early 87 or newer units. just make sure the 79 intake gaskets match the manifold you remove. the difference will be in the center 4 bolts on each side.

the time frame depends on your mechanical ability.

All match up. There was a slight manouvering involved but all the holes line up except for one little thing. On the runners, the gasket for the Tune Port Intake thing, the gasket overlaps a 3rd small hole on the side of one of the runners, it doesn't cover it all up but it still covers, this a problem?
