I hate to bring this up again, but i just cant get it right. I converted to rally gauges. I have read all the posts about swaping out two wires "TYPICALLY: swap 5 and 7 GEN and FUEL wires" which i did but no luck. Here is something i did during the restoration i changed the front wiring harness to a GAUGE HARNESS dose this mean i dont need to swap 5 and 7 GEN and FUEL wires ?
I am using the gauge type sending units for oil & temp.can anyone help me ???

Hey Bill..I havent messed with the gto harness but ive done old camaros....which harness is the guage harness under hood..or dashboard harness? or both if both you shouldnt have to do anything...if not follow the contact from the fuel guage and see if the pug contacts are meeting it..when you plug the cluster in

The engine compartment harnesses are the same. The only differences are transmission type and if it was Ram Air or not. Yes, the wires will still have to be swapped.

Also what year car is this, as i believe the 2 wire swap is for 69-71 clusters, and 72 has a different procedure. So if you have a 69-71 car and gauges from a 69-71 then yes the tan and brown get swapped, its very easy, just use a small screwdriver to push down the retaining arms in the plug and pull the wires out. then bend the little arm back up again carefully and reinsert them in the other hole. When its backwards, your gas gauge will act like a volt meter, going up when its running and your gen light will be on brighter or darker depending on your gas level. Let us know if you get it.

P.S. If you are just trying to get this working by plugging it in with the dash out, you need to ground the gauge pod or they wont work at all.

grandville,

no. Just means you have to move some wire positions within the Harness' gaugepod connector.

Thanks to everyone who helped I FINALY GOT IT. I was thinking the swapping of the wires had to do with the oil/temp gauges, I now see the swap is to get the fuel gauge working correctly. Now it makes sense to me.Thanks again for going over this for me...
