I want to build up the original 389 in a 64 Catalina, does anyone know of a good book to use for guidelines/part suppliers, etc. I want to keep it pretty close to stock, but I'd like to get 350HP. I think I'd like to put a tripower setup in it to...any advice is appreciated. Thanks

My suggestion would be to copy the highest HP
389 engine: (the 1966 GTO) and use the same cam, lifters, etc. The tri-power for a 64 GTO or big car would be correct but any 62 to 64 tri-power would directly interchange. I know the manifold goes back to 61, guys but it has been a LONG time since I saw a 61 tri-power. If you are going to drive the car you have two choices. Retain the high compression motor specs, etc and buy good but expensive gas for occasional drives or put in lower compression pistons and run the panther pi$$ that is out there in quantity. A set of the "Long Branch" exhaust manifolds would help the car breathe but are not totally necessary. Tom V.

what is "1-RPO"? looking at engine combinations for 64 big pontiacs, there is a 350HP 389. it says Cam#524009, high output fuel pump, special lifter assembly, 11110 52 dist., and 10.75:1 CR. I think this was an option for Catalina's too...? where can I find more info(heads?, valves?)...and how many HP was/is the 66 GTO's 389?...and how much is "good expensive gas"?..Thanks
