New to the scene and in need of honest advise. Just purchased a 72 GTO with 400CI and A.T. Car is really in excellent shape, but planning to do a frame off. Big dilema - a friend is offering an excellent price for a 454 crate engine (GM Performance) he wants out of. Price is right and will allow time to get the 400 re-built. Is there a "kit" I can purchase to have the 454 bolt right in? Will it? Are there other considerations (besides not being Pontiac) I need to know?

I don't know of any kit. I know that the motor mounts are different and the tranny won't directly bolt up to a 454. I think you can get an adapter for that but I'm not sure. You might want to post under Non Pontiac engines and see what you can find there.

You will also have to modify engine wiring harness because the starter is on the other side I would say you would be better off rebuilding the 400 this winter and save yourself the hassel of changing motor mounts tranny and wiring

The swap would end up being a LOT more involved than it would appear to the unfamiliar. And, after all of the messing around and added expense, you'd have a red-headed bastard stepchild of a car. The Chevy guys won't like it because it's a Pontiac, and we won't either because it isn't powered by Pontiac.
Save yourself a lot of grief, and a lot of money (although spent in a nickel-and-dime manner), and build the engine you've got.

I agree with THJ. My philosophy is, if it's a Chevy, throw a Pontiac motor in it, I have (twice), if it's a Pontiac leave it Pontiac powered.

Well it stays Pontiac. Thanks for the advise - I'll have the 400 re-built and remain a true Pontiac!

4 out of the 7 -72 Lemans i have owned have been Chevy powered from the factory,small block 350,being as they were Canadian Pontiacs

For '70 Oshawa built Tempest/LeMans, was the 350 Chevy 2bbl the only Chevy option above the 250 6 cyl??? Realize, BBC was not avail, but would like to know if factory 4bbl 350 was avail.

Thats a good question,none of mine ever had 4bbls on them(till later)
