Default First Gear Grind With Clutch In

So last night I'm driving around for about an hour and everything is great. All of a sudden I grind going into first gear. It went away as soon as I let the clutch out. I thought maybe I just hadnt put the clutch all the way in. A couple minutes later im at a stop light, clutch all the way in and car in gear. All of a sudden its starts grinding while im standing still... I put it in nuetral and the grinding goes away. Just to be safe, I start in 2nd gear and take off. Does this a few more times before i can get it all the way home. It only seems to grind with clutch in and in first gear. What possibly could be causing this? Its a Muncie 4 speed.

thanks,

Matt

Since it didn't do it before, I'd look at your clutch adjustment.... has the free travel increased? If not, the next logical assumption is the pressure plate is experiencing wear or a finger adjuster nut on the B&B plate is backing out.

Agree it might just need some adjustment. Thats normal maintenence over time and usage. Next time it wants to grind, try this: clutch in, put in 2nd or 3rd then move over to 1st. And dont jam it just ease it in. That gets the syncros spinning. Also as you come to a stop leave the clutch in and move to 1st after you totally stop. Just some tricks I learned driving trucks.

also check bellhousing to block bolts, if they get loose and allow the bellhousing to move back even a small amount, the clutch wont work properly

thanks guys. Would it make sense that it just needs an adjustment if it grinds once its already in gear, not necessarily when im putting it in gear?

if it grinds once areadly in gear you may have to adjust/replace bushings in the shift linkage as it may not be engaging all the way

This actually sounds more plausible.

are these in the shifter or in the tranny itself? if they are in the tranny, can the be replaced while still in the car? I havent done much tranny work ever, so forgive me if these seem like basic questions.

thanks,

Matt

yes the can be replaced with the transmission in the car. you just go underneath pull the shift rod out replace the bushing and put it back in.

Default pit packs

AFAIK, those hurst pit packs often do not fit our stock OEM hurst shifters.
(You didn't mention what kind of car you have or if the shifter is OEM or not. I have a 1970 GTO with OEM shifter and those pit packs do not work with this setup at least - The pit packs are for the aftermarket shifters).

You could contact Peter Serio for all the parts as well, he literally wrote the book on hurst shifters: http://www.precisionpontiac.com/

Also, you might want to realign the shifter while you are at it. There's a hole through all the shift "paddles" (don't know what to call them) - under the car... You stick a drill bit or something through all of them when shifter is in neutral, then adjust shift rod length to line up well when the trans is also in the neutral position (no pressure on any rod/drill bit).

Then remove the drill bit.

p.s. - You also could have something as simple as bolts coming loose... Make sure the shifter is well bolted to the trans, and all the shift levers coming off the trans are well secured.
