During the restoration of my 66 GTO the radiator shop the cleaned my gas tank welded up the vent tube hole and in the rush to finish I just put the vent tube in place in the trunk and let it unhooked. Every time I take the gas cap off there is pressure. I think I want to hook up the vent tube for pressure relief and correctness.

My initial thought is take a very damp rag and stuff it down the filler neck enough to seal it off and then drill a hole for the line. I am thinking a rag that wet should absorb any vapors for a short period of time. I think I can do this without dropping the tank. Any thoughts here or just get a vented cap or drop & drain the tank then do this?

A vented cap will spill everywhere, when you nail it full, it will come out.
Did they just fill in the end of the vent tube on the neck?

The reason I ask, on my 67, the vent tube on the filler neck is kinda long. I could see just drilling out the weld, or cutting a 1/2 inch off it. Still plenty of room, for a rubber hose to slip on.

Rugratman- the patched the hole, the tube on the filler neck was gone and I assumed it was just a hole in the neck didn't realize till reassembly what it was for.

So, if you drill out the spot, then what?
To be done in the right spot, I would think the tank would have to be dropped. I doubt you can get a drill in the right spot for the angle .
In case you did not know, the neck had a 1.5 - 2 inch tube for the vent, that was then run up and bent over then came back down.
The originals were rubber then metal, I believe.
I just used a piece of braided steel AN line and did the same. But the vent tube is kinda important, are you going to tap it?

You might be able to lower it a bit and use a really long bit. Doubt it though.

Rugratman- I have the correct vent tube and grommet in the trunk now, it's just not hooked into the tank. I though of drilling a hole then using jb weld to mount a short nipple like in your picture to the tank then connect the vent tube to that.

That nipple is pretty skinny, even a small piece of brake line might work....good luck, and dont blow yourself up...LOL
