I am almost positive I have removed every head bolt from my 557 block but i still cannot get the head to move. Any advice? - am I missing a bolt/s or do i simply need to pry on it, i have given it some whacks with a rubber mallet to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Put a bolt in loose
With the rockers off, spark plugs in, crank/rotate the engine. The compression will raise the head.

Check the two end bolts under the valve cover. They sit in a deep pocket and will be covered with oil and sludge.

You have 10 head bolts per side.
I have had quite a few gaskets that seemed like the head was welded to the block. LOL. Just stick a 1/2" breaker bar down one of the intake ports and put your belly against the exh side of the head. Give it a quick jerk or a couple of them. |

Thanks for help all...i got them off last night...rookie mistake missing the center studs under valve cover that had nuts on them
![]() I am now having issues removing the harmonic balancer pulley, I did remove the 4 (1/2 inch) bolts holding on the pulley but no luck getting it off. Any ideas? Oh yeah, when i pulled the oil drain plug lots of water came first!

Good thing you are pulling heads off then. Are you getting them checked to make sure they aren't warped or cracked?

Take two prybars or long screwdrivers and apply rocking pressure to each side of the pulley.

yes, i will have them looked at. I know this is probably not the popular thing to say i plan to reuse the stock 6x8 heads. Can these be made to work ok for a street motor?

they will work just fine with a street motor. just as long as they check out ok.

Brad, I have the following: Heads: #62, #46, #4x, #6X-4. The 6X-4 are complete ready to bolt on. I had them on my show car, but decided to go with KRE aluminum heads. Heads have stainless steel Manley valves, Comp Cams springs, retainers, locks, and seals. Heads have been milled to 90cc combustion chambers with a mild port and polish. Brass freeze plugs installed seats and guides done three summers ago. Heads were assembled and tested by PA Performance in Shediac NB. The 6x-4 heads are $800.00. The remaining heads are $200.00 per set and will need to be taken apart and refurbished. ...also, if i chose to reuse the 6x8 is there a good setup for them, what CR would i have on the 400? If your taking about removing the harmonic balancer you have to remove the large bolt in the center of it to get it off.

The 6X-4 are your best choice. With a 90cc combustion chamber the cr will be 8.76.
The 6x-8 heads with a combustion chamber of 101cc the combustion ratio on a 400 will be 8.12.

To remove the Balancer you need to take the bolt out in the center that goes right to the crank. It takes a 15/16" socket and usually a long breaker bar. If the pulley is really stuck, I use a large 3 prong puller. The puller has worked for me, but be carefull not to seperate the balancer if you use one.
