I've got a puzzle here. I tried to get some info from PHS on my 72 GTO back in 1991. They told me they had no information for me because my car was built in Canada. I contacted GM of canada and they sent me a build sheet and option breakdown. Now, I've been reading that there were no GTO's built in Canada except for 70 and 73. And my vin has the P in it for the Pontiac plant.....and yes I tried explaining this to them back in 91 and they said...nope...built in Canada.....soooo...what gives?

Post a picture of your trim tag. That might tell more of the story to some of the experts that can fully decode a trim tag. Some cars were produced in the U.S. specifically for export to Canada and I'm thinking that yours might have been one of them.

I hate to complain about the pic, but it's a little hard to read at that angle on my computer screen.

If it says "PON" (which it looks like it does) and the VIN has a "P" in it, then the car was absolutely built in Pontiac. It would seem to me that PHS would have the build info (even if the car was built in Pontiac for Canadian sale/usage).

Perhaps there was a misunderstanding/miscommunication when you asked them back in '91. I'd ask again and see what they say.

Please report back here if you find anything out, because I'd be interested to know.

Edit: Can you post pictures of the build sheet, too? (Just cover the last portion of the VIN and any key codes)

Well, I talked to them on the phone back then, explained everything to them, including the fact it had the P in the vin and the code on the cowl tag...lol....Ill have to try them again, maybe they have info now. I'll try and copy the buildsheet later today, but its damn fuzzy...maybe i can get the wifey to try to clear it up on the comp...she's a guru...lol...but heres some of the GM of Canada paperwork they sent me....

'72 GTOs were built in Pontiac, Lakewood, Framingham and Fremont. I am beginning to sense that the issue is that PHS does not have (ie, keep) the specific build information for cars built here in the US but sold in Canada, due to some paperwork/customs anomoly. Hence the fact that your car has a P in the VIN (because it was, in fact, built in Pontiac) but that the information was only available through GM of Canada (which is a great service, btw, second only to PHS).

I'm guessing they didn't actually say built in Canada back in 1991 but that's how you are remembering it. Looks like the car was built in Pontiac but for sale and use in Canada.

As an aside, my Chevelle is just the opposite: built in Oshawa for sale and use here in the US. I have the build information from GM of Canada for it.

Oshawa trim tags have a very prominent "Made in Canada" stamped into them. Your photo shows a US built trim tag.
