Colt AR-15
Just bought one this past weekend at a local Gun Show. I've been wanting one for years, just haven't ran into a good deal on one, and I'm scared of the many "parts" guns you see folks getting rid of at the shows.
I ran into a guy carrying around a genuine Colt Match grade heavy barrel model. We got together on a price and I ended up with it. I'm looking for a source for parts, flat top upper with short barrel, collapsable stock, sights, scope mounts, etc. I want to set it up for Coyote hunting. They are getting to be a problem in my area, and it's really hard to get on them with my Remington Model 700 Varmit rifle. I need to be able to throw more lead at them, and we're putting a drive on for them next month.....Cliff

Cliff,
I've always wanted one myself. I almost bought one right before the ban. I think I might go for an AR platform chambered a little bigger. You should post some pics of your mods. I just watched a big story about the model 700 misfire problem. Are you aware of the problem with the firing mechanism? http://www.cnbc.com/id/39759366/Docu...ms_for_Decades |

A good source for all rifle & pistol parts is gunbroker.com. and on a lesser scale gunsamerica.com. Check the prices and part numbers then do a search on the web to make sure your getting the best deal. Good hunting!

What is the barrel twist?
I had a HBAR match that would group very well at 200 yds, and still very accurate at 300 (depending on the round). Start at www.AR15.com |

+1 on AR15.com, but stay away from General Discussion and go straight to the AR discussion area. Read everything you can before asking questions, it's probably already covered.

"I just watched a big story about the model 700 misfire problem. Are you aware of the problem with the firing mechanism?"
I've owned mine for at least 30 years, zero issues with it. I did catch some of the footage on the problems with the model 700's, where a women killed her son on an Eld hunt, when she fired into their trailer or cabin either loading or unloading it....very sad. "What is the barrel twist?" 1-7. It should be good with the new ammo and heavier bullet weights. I shot it today for the first time, just to zero it in. I'll do some longer range shooting as soon as it warms up some to get it on the money before we go Coyote hunting.....Cliff

What year is it ? Is it pre or post ban ?
I love mine and have blasted many flee baring critters with it averaging 150-200 yards with a 1:7 barrel. Great all around gun! Post some pictures for us to enjoy. Congrats, Brew |

Not sure about the build date, or how to tell?
I field stripped it down and it has seen very little use. The bolt hadn't been apart for cleaning that I could tell, and the cleaning kit in the buttstock had never been opened. I'll get some pics of it later today.....Cliff

I've got an '85 vintage HBAR...... I've never been a fan of the AR series (I'm an 7.62x51 M1A and FAL kind of guy), but I LOVE my Colt. I got it in a trade back in the late '80's, with the intention of selling it. I still have it and will pass it on to my son.
The HBAR doesn't need much except maybe a better trigger and some type of optic if you have trouble with aperture type sights. IMHO, most of the "tactical" stuff found on ARs is just silly and doesn't improve the functionality of the weapon in any way. I enjoy going to the range and shooting close to MOA with a more or less stock HBAR, and the guy next to me with the tacticool Star Wars blaster, who's making snide comments about my stocker, can't hit the paper....... |

Cliff,
I spend part of my vacation every year shooting P-dogs for a week in South Dakota using Savage Bolt action and Rock River AR varmint barrels 26" n 24". Both have 1/9 twist. I find that the AR shoots just as well as the Savage, which is known for its accuracy. The place I go is a true killing fields. It's like going to work 8-5 sometimes till 8pm. 500-600 rouds a day or more. I find that the ammo makes the biggest difference. Try a bunch of ammo n see which one your gun likes. From your post, I can't tell if you have multiple Cayotes or your gun can't shoot straight. The 700 is a good gun. Also a good trigger makes a huge difference. Jewell, Timken and so on. |

cliff, to find out when it was buit you have to take the serial numbers off the reciever and find a registry book ( some good ar-15/16 books have the listings of the years) as it will tell you what reciever #'s where built what years , colt used to be able to tell you ( like PHS ) but I don't know if they offer this service anymore.

Thanks, I'll take a look.
I've found a pretty good deal on complete uppers, and have an email in to them. I can get a bull barrel upper for about $350, but would have to add sights to it. That's about the least expensive I've seen to date.....Cliff
