Hi everyone. I have just found what I think might be a 1965 GTO rear end, but the seller is located far away and all I have to go on is a picture.

There are no numbers anywhere on the rear end, according to the seller. The only thing I can confirm is that the shock mounts are "1 finger width" from the backing plates.

My question is: when looking at this picture, is there any way to determine whether or not this rear is from a 1965 GTO? Does anything "stick out" to you confirming yes or no?

Appears to be a small upper control arm bushing '64 A-body rearend. Either a '64 Pontiac 8.2 10 bolt, or a '64 Buick 8.2 out of a '64 Olds F-85 or Buick Skylark.

The limited picture shows only one access hole in the axle flange, which denotes Pontiac 8.2, but this axle & the early Buick 8.2 axle will directly interchange in each other housing. The picture also does not give a full view of the axle flange, there may be 3 holes which in this length axle would designate the early Buick 8.2 10 bolt.

If you can a have the seller clean up the cast iron webbing of the center section where the center section spans to the axle tubes, there should be a casting number, starts with a 97xxxx. That is an early Pontiac 8.2 rear casting number. If there is no casting number there, have him ck the area directly behind the pinion flange.

For 1965: A two letter code is stamped on the back passenger side of the axle tube.It identifies the axle ratio and if the axle is equipped with the Safe T-Track option.

PS: On a rusty axle it is very hard to see so you have to clean it down to pure metal.

Hi guys. Thanks for the help. I had the seller measure the upper rear bushing shells and they measured about 1.375". This points to an earlier 1964-style rear end as Ol' Pinion Head suggests. Needless to say, this isn't the rear end I am after.

Still looking for a correct 1965 GTO rear end, ideally YH stamped (355). I have every part to rebuild it including new R&P, Eaton Posi, and bearings. Even a good housing would work in my case, although I would like to get backing plates and axles if possible.

I guess these things are harder to find than I thought.

OK. I have a line on another rear end, this one also is "supposed" to be a 308 posi original to a 1965 GTO. As you will see from the pictures below, it carries casting number 9777142. I always thought that all '65 rears used 9779822?

Anyway, the pictures aren't great, but does 'ol Pinion Head or anyone else have an opinion as to the possible authenticity on this rear?

I have a really nice 1965 housing, casting 9779822 stamped WF (3.23 open) dated C255 (March 25th, 1965) that I would sell. It's apart and very clean in Ohio.
