Hey, I am wanting to get a points eliminator kit. the less maintenance I have to do the better. I was wondering if anyone has any reviews of any. I think Accel points elminator only works with Accel distributor and I don't want to do that. I think some others need additional install kits, etc. I just want to buy the product and install it.
I see there is accel, Mallory, crane cam and a few others. The motor is a 67 and I would like to know what you guys think/have done with success. I just want install and play...not extra crap to buy and install first |

I'm currently running a Pertronix. So far so good but others have had failures.
I ran a Mallory Unilite conversion for years until the shutter came loose under the cap and ate itself one day. The M&H conversion seems to get generally good reviews: http://www.breakerless.com/ Does this mean you aren't giving up on your car?

The best way to eliminate points is called an HEI. They are cheap and you can get parts for them anywhere. Something you cant always do with aftermarket gizmos.

I've had the base original pertronix units in all my old cars for years and years no problem. You do need to remove the distributor to install it properly and check the gaps
on the unit. I would be of the opinion if someone had a failure they didn't install it properly. You can't just stuff the parts in there with the distributor in the engine and hope for the best. |

I have put both the Crane and the Pertronix conversions in my cars and others . Had no problems with either . The new Pertronix Ignitor III is the newest one out there. It has the rev limiter like the Crane and is easy to install and does not have the plastic ring like the older versions and is easy to instal . Just remove the points and put it in . Just make sure you ask for the Ignitor III as some places are still selling the Ignitor II and not selling the new one yet. .http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor3/default.aspx

im thinking if the distributor has to be removed in both instances, just to buy the HEI one that was posted earlier. If the distributor could be kept in place, I know which one I would be buying though

There is no need to remove the distributor with the Ignitor III. It does not need to be taken out to put washers on the shaft like the old ones did.

I am running the Pertonix in three of my cars and have had no issues. They are very reliable.

Use a M&H single wire points conversion , accepts all stock components .

Thanks for the info guys. So ultimately they are all relatively the same pain in the ass to install (minus the pertronix iii which is double the price of everything else), so it all comes down to brand preference.
I will likely just buy the HEI distributor and put it in the trunk and never install it

I always use the original pertronix unit because it is inexpensive
and I know it works for decades without a problem. I don't feel it's worth spending way more money just to keep from removing the distributor, plus the Pertronix III hasn't proven itself for decades yet. As for an HEI ignition, it is great if you like being stranded on the side of the road. The spark on them is too hot, causing plug wire failures, rotor failures, cap failures and coil failures. Also the pickup coil wires are bad about breaking as they flex everytime the vacuum advance moves.....most unreliable ignition ever put on a car in my opinion. I called around and I can get a Pertronix kit locally for the price I can from the USA, so I will just snag that tomorrow. Thanks for the info guys, I hope the install works fine (it won't, this is me after all)
