Not sure you need to do anything with the stock valve covers if all you are changing is the rockers.

I have 1.6 Scorpion rockers under stock covers, just using the thick Butler gaskets.
In the past I had used the regular rubber gaskets when I didn't have a set of the thick ones, but used two of them glued together. That worked just fine, too.

I used the thick gaskets and valve cover bolts for a ram air IV with H&S rockers.

Thanks guys. How about crower or comp steel roller rockers?

You may not have much of a clearance problem with the roller rockers but where I ran into problems was when I used poly locks. Those will be the tallest point in your valve train..
FWIW...not all poly locks are the same height, so you can shop around there some for the shortest ones that will work for you. Just my $.02 ..............Jerry |

I had to run spacers and go thru the Summit catalog to find just the right Polylocks. Are you going full roller? I'm not a huge cane of roller tip rockers.

I went with the Crower Enduro stainless steel rollers and used the thicker gaskets, but my builder says they would have still cleared with the standard thickness.

I like hearing that! I have the Enduro Stainless Roller Rockers for my new build and will be using the stock chrome valve covers.

Some of the later stock valve covers have the oil drippers built in that makes matters a little worse. Just a heads up for the later T/A guys. If you`re running stock A/C brackets, there`s only so much room to raise the covers.

With RAIV length valves achieving 1.7" installed height and HS 1.65 rockers all I needed was an extra thick cork gasket to clear with stock chrome covers (no drippers)

It's a good idea to allow for gasket shrinkage also. I'm running Harland Sharp 1.65's with .630" lift with the 5/16" thick cork gaskets under my stock '67 valve covers on top of my 670 heads on the street car. Using rolled up aluminum foil across the rockers showed I had clearance, but not much. I figured if not the next snugging down of the cover then the second tightening was going to produce contact as I chased the shrinking gasket. Ended up running two thick gaskets for now. Plan on eventually purchasing the Crower stainless rockers and they will easily clear with one thick gasket.

I'm using Harland Sharp 1.5's with reproduction chrome valve covers (no oil drippers) and regular gaskets - no clearance issues.
