I know they didn't stamp the vin on the block in '64, would the PHS papers have the engine serial number on it?

maybe...its an on going debate, but i have..with my own eyes seen EUN (engine unit number) on PHS on early cars...its been decades...but ive seen it more than 10 times

some even argue that EUN is a made up term..but on the early car PHS it has a box listed

My PHS has no EUN number listed for my April '65 built GTO. The Protect-o-Plate has it, though.

I have seen the EUN on the PHS on 1964 GTOs only on the Fremont built cars not any other plant. I have two April built Fremont cars and they both have the EUN on them, My Pontiac built cars do not have the EUN on the PHS. I would not consider April built cars early build. Have never seen EUN on any PHS in 1965 or 1966 for that matter! Cant explain why Fremont cars in 1964 have the EUN and other plants did not. THANKS!

For '64

The Pontiac Plant Manifests do NOT show the EUN.

The Fremont, KC, & Balt Plant PHS docs DO show the EUN.

On the Fremont doc, the EUN was typed on. Depending on the quality of the microfiche for a given '64 Fremont record, the EUN may or may not be real legible. Most are pretty legible in my experience.

The KC & Balt Plants made an imprint of the factory produced Ident-O-Plate on the Shipping Order record (the PHS doc).

The factory half of the '64 Ident-O-Plate included the EUN so it will be on the PHS record.

Again, some are more legible than others and since this was an ink stamp, then microfiched, then printed from the microfiche, legibility can be difficult.

The Pontiac Plant produced about 60% of all '64 Pontiacs.

But for '64 GTOs built elsewhere, the EUN is known.

Of course, restorers know this so many '64 GTO blocks have been restamped to "match" the PHS.

Worth comparing block cast dates to the EUN. I have a log of '64 EUN vs. cast date that I use to determine if the "match" makes sense. Helps to ferret out restamps.

Looks like the cowl tag was perhaps stamped same day as BHC.

Thx '63, I'll make note of it. I only record the block cast date. I have a record of another block cast the same day.

What is the engine code? I record that and the model too.
