Default "Original miles"

Ok, ok, I'm sure this was coined back in the day when odos only went to 99,999 miles, so 'original' was meant to say that it hadn't rolled over.

Well, odometers have had 100k+ capability for a long time now (30+ years?), and this particular term has always rubbed me wrong. What other kind of miles would they be, "Replacement miles"? "Aftermarket miles"? Puh-lease.

Yeah, this is just one of those things that gets my goat (so to speak ). I only get OCD on a few things...including ads for cars that are "all original", yet have been repainted, Judges that started out as a LeMans, "Munchie" transmissions, "Rockcrusher" transmissions that turn out to be an M20 with a bad bearing, "Posse" rears, "12 Volt" rears, "12 bolt" rears that are obviously 10 bolt rears, engines that have "heathers", or transmissions that have a "stall converter".

Ok, I feel somewhat better I know some of you espouse some of these, and some deride them. Surely I've left out a few gems, as well!

Original miles is exactly what you stated, anything under 100,000 on a car that rolls over at 100,000. Imo.

Pretty sure your question is rhetorical but here goes. It's usually obvious when a car has been turned over 100,000 but who knows if it's 1xx,xxx miles, 2xx,xxx or 3xx,xxx miles.
Under 100,000 is referred to original miles and over is considered not, common knowledge.

Usually they are saying this 12,000 original mile car is a fantastic buy.

And not it's a 212,000 original mile car.

The 'original' miles is the below like 50,000 miles.

been around cars for 55 years and never hard it used in that respect. Over 100k mile is tmu or true mileage unknown. It must be where you are from because around the Philly area 'original miles' is not used in that respect. Must be regional?

Arizona title have an A, B or C designation for miles.
When A is checked, it means "Actual mileage" as shown on odometer.
B means mileage in excess of mechanical limits of odometer.
C means NOT actual mileage.

The title for my 68 says C....not sure why. Perhaps the original owner reported the odometer was broken. My C3 Corvette is Box A (around 64k miles). My 55 Chevy is Box C. My 99 Ford 7.3 is Box A, it shows almost 400k on the odo.
We have some trucks at work that have rolled over one million miles, we registered those as Box B.

I have always assumed "original miles" is the miles represented on the odometer. If the odometer tools over then it's miles in excess of (whatever the limit is on that meter)

I think the kicker for me was a newer Honda on CL with "only 150k original miles".

I think a more accurate term would be "actual miles", if there was some question of what the odo read.

I wish I had a 326 car for sale so I could say it had a "326 Big Block", just to screw with 'em. Sadly, they probably wouldn't get it.

Oh yeah, another ad for another Judge just reminded me of this one....."driveline" (referring to the tubular spinny thing that connects the trans and the rear).

I believe the proper term is "driveshaft". Or prop shaft, if you're old school

Where I come from, the driveline (aka drivetrain) is all the stuff that makes the car move, including the engine, trans, driveshaft, and rear.

OK, I think I'm out of car-related pet peeves now. I'll be good

A pet peeve of mine that always makes me laugh is when people list cars for sale and then describe now much money they have "invested" so far to date. That amount is usually several times the asking price of the car. Seems like a bad investment to me.

Well....if they're not "original" miles, what are they? Fake miles? Repro miles?

Inquiring minds want to know.

My GTO has about 130,000 original miles on it .. and then about 100,000 artificial miles put on it in my dreams, and then several thousand chinese miles, and a few thousand fictitious miles, and about 50,000 miles that were put on it in a different dimension, and then a couple hundred hours of virtual miles.

But... the ODO only counted the original miles, stupid ODO.

Roll back miles?
Illegal miles?

Used car salesmen used to 'roll' them back to make it look like a low mileage car.
(worth a lot more)

Federal law made it illlegal, but didn't really stop them.
(or anyone else)

Rolled back mileage reminds me of my car. I bought my 73 GTO new & when I got married the 1st time I sold traded it in at a chevy dealer for a new car & it had 54K on it then. Then a year later I saw it for sale & bought it back. It had only 41K on it & I asked the girl how many miles it had on it when she bought it. She told me she bought it because it only had 30K on it & thought it was a good deal because it such low miles on it. I went to the dealer who I traded it in to & asked the service mgr. who was a friend of mine about it & he said the girl must have turned it back. I laughed because I got the odometer statement from her when I bought it back. I showed him the statement from when I traded it in & hers , he had nothing to say but gave me a $ 50.00 gift cert. for the parts dept. for not going upstairs with it. LOL. We had lunch shortly after & I got a good laugh out of the whole deal. I put the miles as close as I could to what it should have been & now my car has only 82K on it & I tell everyone about it & tell them that the miles are somewhere as close to original as it can be + or - 5K because of this.

If I ever had a friend that rolled a ODO back I'd never talk to him again. Just not my kind of people, that's basically theft, plain and simple.
