Can I use a 69-70 GTO gas tank in a 68?
Would this work? I'm not worried if they are cosmetically different, or if I have to plug an extra vent. My 68 tank is leaking and I rather not have to reuse my mangled filler neck. I see the 69-70 tank already has the neck installed. Are the angles of the neck different between 68-69? Thanks for the input.

68 is unique...thats for sure...and they have their own part number for the gas tank..
as popular as the cars are...i'm sure if they interchanged it would be listed as such post a pic of your tank..3 or 4 good shots at all angles, the neck etc..i have 4 or 5 new 69-up tanks around i will get pics and we will figure it out for you and everyone else

Happy to take as many as needed if these don't help. They list the tank without the neck for 68-70. I just can't imagine the neck is so different that it wouldn't function.

i will get a couple pics..but on the ground we could be more sure....
necks are diff often...so when you accelerate it doesnt run out the back also venting could be diff...i will get a pic or two..especially the neck so we can see..later today..it 900 degrees in my loft right now..and after it cools i can get one down etc..

The filler neck on the 68 measures 13 inches from the tank. I have another 2-3 inches before the neck is close to the license plate bracket/bumper.
I wished I noticed the filler neck before I added like 20 gallons of gas... Tank was almost totally empty. |

69 tank works on a 68
Last winter I ordered a 69 tank from Autozone and installed it in my 68. You just need to tweak the angle of the neck upward to get it to line up with the opening in the bumper. Be careful with tweaking it so you don't create a leak at the tank. I was surprised how easily it moved, so don't get on it too hard.

It's also easy to remove and re install your 68 neck onto the later tank. It is simply soldered in and you can remove it with a propane torch. Just make sure to drain your tank good. I've also refilled the old tank up with water to keep the fumes down. This is not a problem with a new tank if you have to remove a neck from it. I've done several of them over the years.
